Handcrafted Walnut Desks – Directly from the Manufacturer

Earthy Timber’s Walnut Desk

Crafted exclusively from native timber, Earthy Timber’s walnut desk showcases a stunning array of features and beautifully pronounced grain patterns. Each walnut desk is handcrafted to size, to order, offering a choice of modern square edging or the natural elegance of a live edge desk design. The rich, dark walnut wood serves as a luxurious focal point in any space, while providing an organic, earthy feel.

At Earthy Timber, we believe an office desk should be more than just functional. Our walnut desks are thoughtfully crafted to create a calm, harmonious work environment, seamlessly blending functionality with the principles of biophilic design.

Sustainable Journey from Tree to Walnut Desk under Earthy Timber Roof

At Earthy Timber, sustainability is at the core of our operations. Our solid walnut desks are made from salvaged walnut trees that have died of natural causes or had to be cut down for health reasons. This eco-conscious approach ensures that no healthy tree is harmed in the crafting of your custom walnut desk. The walnut wood slabs are carefully selected, vacuum kiln-dried, and processed entirely in-house, ensuring that every step of the journey – from tree to walnut desk is handled with the utmost care and respect for the environment.

Unlike healthy trees, salvaged trees display an array of features that make them truly unique. The natural streaks, in-grown bark, occasional embedded bullet marks, and subtle stains in the timber create a one-of-a-kind piece that no plantation tree could replicate. Salvaged trees are not only superior because we save healthy trees, but also because they carry the distinct marks of their life’s journey. When you choose an Earthy Timber walnut desk, expect uniqueness – your desk will be a true testament to nature’s beauty and resilience.

Desk Made from 2 or 3 Walnut Slabs

Our walnut desks are crafted from 2-3 wide slabs originating from the same tree, creating a seamless, whole picture that is far superior to narrow, small pieces commonly used by standard suppliers. This technique ensures a cohesive, striking appearance with an unmatched depth.

Embracing the Beauty of  Walnut Wood Rustic Features

At Earthy Timber, we believe that rustic features are what make our walnut desks truly unique. ‘Imperfections’ like splits, open knots of walnut desktop are not flaws; they are a testament to the life of the tree and the natural process of wood ageing. These characteristics give each walnut desk its own personality, making it a piece of art as much as a piece of furniture. We take pride in highlighting these beautiful details by filling them with non-transparent resin, showcasing their beauty in a truly refined way. Depending on the piece, we may also use a wood filler or leave certain features open if we feel that preserving them in their natural state will enhance the beauty of your desk without compromising its functionality.

We also offer our luxury range of walnut desks, featuring stunning transparent resin details, tree bark preservation , and intricate walnut wood patterns. This high-end option, designed by As Stawicki, is perfect for those who want a walnut wood desk that is both luxurious and deeply connected to the natural world.

Edging Choices – Modern Sqaure Edge, Mixed Edge or Live Edge Desk

At Earthy Timber, we offer a variety of edging choices for your walnut desk to suit different aesthetic preferences and design visions. The live edge is one of the most eye-catching features of walnut, showcasing nature’s artistry at its finest. These edges, with their bold, organic patterns, often resemble a tiger print, adding an element of wild beauty and uniqueness to each piece. The live edge preserves the natural, unrefined contours of the tree, making every desk truly one-of-a-kind.

For those seeking a more modern and sleek look, the square edge provides clean, straight lines that highlight the walnut’s rich tones and pronounced grain. This edging option offers a sharp, contemporary contrast to the wood’s natural features, giving your desk a refined and polished appearance.

Alternatively, the mixed edge combines both the precision of a square edge with the organic beauty of a live edge, offering a balanced design that blends modern sophistication with the natural irregularity of the wood.

At Earthy Timber, each edging choice is crafted with the utmost care, ensuring that your walnut desk not only fits your functional needs but also becomes a statement piece with timeless appeal.

Walnut Desk Legs

In our opinion, the best walnut desk appearance is achieved with matte black steel legs, offering a sleek, understated look that allows the rich walnut timber tops to truly stand out. This minimalist design beautifully complements the dark wood tones, adding a touch of modernity while preserving the natural essence of the walnut. For those who prefer a more industrial feel, a natural steel finish provides a raw, rugged look that contrasts the walnut’s bold, organic features. While matching walnut legs can be crafted for a traditional look, we believe the steel options truly elevate the desk, creating a more striking and contemporary statement piece that highlights the beauty of the wood in its most modern form.

Walnut Desk Height

Although we only list a few standard height options for desk legs in our online shop, we offer fully customisable heights to meet your exact requirements. This is especially beneficial for clients who are either very tall or very short, where standard sizes may not be suitable. Alternatively, you can purchase the walnut desktop from us and pair it with a sit-stand base from online suppliers.

While we don’t offer adjustable-height standing desk bases ourselves, we believe in focusing on what we do best – crafting high quality wood desktops and set height legs. It wouldn’t be fair to mark up a product that we haven’t manufactured ourselves and that you can easily purchase directly from an online supplier. While we don’t endorse any specific brand, many of our clients have chosen frames from Jarvis and Flexispot.

In-House Vacuum Kiln Drying

At Earthy Timber, we utilise advanced vacuum kiln drying technology to ensure walnut slabs achieve optimal stability. Our meticulous walnut kiln drying process includes monitoring the moisture content halfway through the slab thickness, ensuring uniform, below 10% moisture level throughout. Only high temperatures and a thorough, careful drying process ensure the wood’s stability and eliminate the risk of insects. The result is timber that is perfect for even the most challenging environments, with no risk of warping or twisting.

Thanks to our precision timber kiln drying process, Earthy Timber walnut is exceptionally stable, providing lasting quality for any project.

Desk Made from Authentic, Natural Materials

We take pride in using only authentic materials like solid timber and pure steel – no imitations, no cheap alternatives. The result is a walnut desk that is not only visually stunning and hardwearig but also deeply connected to the natural world.

Fully Customised Walnut Desks

No two spaces are the same, which is why we offer custom walnut desks made to order. Whether you need a small dark wood desk made of walnut for a home office or a large walnut desk for an executive office, we can create a piece that perfectly fits your requirements. Our bespoke service allows you to choose the exact size, edge, and finish of your walnut desk, ensuring it complements your space and style.

Our commitment to quality means that we control every aspect of the production process, from selecting the timber, in-house wood kiln drying to crafting the walnut desk. This hands-on approach ensures that your dark wood desk is of the highest quality, with no third-party materials or processes involved.

Complementary Walnut Furniture for a Cohesive Office Space

A well-designed office is one that feels cohesive and harmonious. To complement your walnut desk, Earthy Timber offers a range of matching walnut furniture, including walnut shelves, large wooden boardroom tables, and executive desks. Crafted from planks from the same tree, these pieces ensure a seamless aesthetic throughout your office or home.

Why Choose Earthy Timber for Your Walnut Desk

Earthy Timber is a pioneer in sustainable furniture design, and our natural walnut desks are a testament to our commitment to quality, sustainability, and biophilic design. Each dark wood desk made of walnut is crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail, ensuring that you receive a piece of furniture that is not only beautiful but also built to last.

Explore our range of solid wood desks and discover how a piece of Earthy Timber furniture can transform your workspace into a place of tranquility, harmony, and natural beauty.

Our steel legs (finished raw, matt black or matt anthracite) and solid wood table legs are made to order and individually calibrated to suit each specific countertop construction. This is a truly bespoke service, tailored not only to the dimensions of your solid wood table or solid wood desktop, but also to its unique construction and the natural movement of timber as it expands and contracts in response to changes in temperature and humidity.

This careful engineering helps prevent cracks, warping, and splits in the wood. Combined with our precise vacuum kiln drying process, it ensures furniture of exceptional stability and quality, built to last for generations.

Please note that, for obvious reasons, we are unable to advise on the suitability of legs or support systems sourced elsewhere.

As the name implies, all the top edges are finished with a straight edge to give it a traditional finish.

All our square edges are eased by hand. By taking sharpness off the wood edge (contour, border, outline), we accomplish soft, pleasant to touch edge,  whilst preserving crisp, sharp, contemporary appearance.

This edge style showcases the wood’s natural contours, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece that highlights the character of the material.

Please note wood edges opposite to the grain direction (usually short sides, described as width (depth) of the top are always square.

Countertop Width (Depth) Considerations:

– On average, the width of a live edge countertop can fluctuate within a 100mm range, depending on the natural shape of the tree, so please ensure you take this into account when specifing the countertop’s width.

– If your countertop has specific width (depth) restrictions, please provide the minimum and/or maximum acceptable width when placing your order [in notes to the order]

– Without specified restrictions, we embrace the natural flow of the live edge, which may lead to variations in width throughout the surface

– We may refine (square) certain areas of the live edge to enhance usability while maintaining the wood’s organic beauty

– When quoting/placing an order, the width provided in the quotation/order should reflect the average measurement you’d like your edge to oscillate around

A fusion of natural and structured design, the part live, part square edge countertop offers the best of both worlds. This style features a combination of live edge and straight edges along the same side, blending organic and clean lines in a harmonious way.

– Please specify your minimum and maximum width (depth) requirements when ordering if such restrictions exist [in notes to the order]

– If no restrictions are provided, we will allow the part live part square edge to flow naturally while ensuring functionality

– Certain natural curves and protrusions may be subtly adjusted to achieve the best balance of aesthetics and practicality

– When quoting/placing an order, the width provided in the quotation /order should reflect the average measurement you’d like your edge to oscillate around

Important Information about Dimensions & Natural Variations

Every solid salvaged wood countertop is individually handcrafted from carefully selected timber planks. Because every tree is unique, we do not simply manufacture to a fixed size – we carefully select the combination of boards that will create the most beautiful and visually balanced finished piece while working as close as possible to your requested dimensions.

In some cases, this may mean your countertop is manufactured slightly longer and/or wider than the dimensions requested. This is intentional and allows us to preserve the natural proportions, character, and visual impact of the timber. A small degree of oversizing is a normal part of the bespoke manufacturing process and should not be regarded as a defect.

If your project has strict dimensional requirements – for example, where the countertop must fit precisely between walls, inside a recess, or against existing cabinetry – you must let us know by adding a note in the Notes to Order section when placing your order. Please specify your minimum and/or maximum acceptable dimensions, or clearly state if the dimensions must be exact. If no such instructions are provided, we will assume there is reasonable dimensional flexibility and will manufacture your countertop as close as possible to your requested dimensions while selecting the most suitable timber to achieve the best overall visual result.

If you choose a live edge or part live edge countertop, please remember that the width will naturally fluctuate along its length, following the original profile of the tree. These natural variations are one of the defining features of genuine live edge timber and are what make every piece completely unique.

If your live edge or part live edge project is restricted by width, you must specify the minimum and/or maximum acceptable width in the Notes to Order when placing your order. If no width restrictions are provided, we will assume you are happy for us to determine the final width, prioritising the natural shape of the timber and the overall visual impact of your live edge or part live edge piece, while keeping the finished countertop as close as possible to your requested size.

Finishing Options for Solid Wood Countertops

Unfinished (Raw) – This is our most cost-effective option and represents a natural stage in the countertop’s craftsmanship journey. The unfinished wooden countertop is produced to the same high structural and material standards as all of our finished pieces and is delivered in a completely unfinished state that requires substantial additional work before installation and use.

Delivered unsanded and untreated, this option features open knots, fissures, and natural voids, along with unfinished, non-smooth edges. As this timber is sourced from salvaged trees, these characteristics are to be expected and form part of its rustic charm.

Any filling of knots or voids –  using wood filler, resin, or alternative materials – is entirely at the client’s discretion and should be guided by personal aesthetic preference and intended use. Some clients choose to retain the open features to preserve the timber’s natural, rustic character, while others prefer a smoother, more uniform surface. Extensive sanding, surface preparation, filling (if desired), and the application of a protective finish are all the responsibility of the client. This worktop is not suitable for immediate use upon delivery.

This option is best suited to customers who have the tools, experience, and time to complete the finishing process themselves. It is ideal for hands-on individuals looking to fully customise their solid wood countertop from scratch, save on finishing costs, and create a truly unique piece tailored to their space.

Please note: tables and desks are only available as fully finished, fully protected products.

Fine Sanding Only (Ready for application of the protective finish of your choice) – Offered at a modestly higher cost than our raw (unfinished) option, the sanded countertop is supplied with a fully sanded, smooth surface that is ready for immediate application of the protective finish of your choice. Prominent natural features are professionally filled using resin or organic fillers to enhance visual appearance while preserving the wood’s natural character. Select features may be intentionally left open where they contribute to the piece’s overall aesthetic and natural charm. This option significantly reduces preparation time and is ideal for clients seeking a refined, semi-finished surface without the labour associated with full raw preparation.

Important note for the countertops that require on-site modifications – if your countertop requires on-site size adjustments or cutouts, you should choose either ‘unfinished’ or ‘sanded only’ option. This is because any pre-applied protective finish will be disrupted during your modifications, resulting in visible inconsistencies. If a pre-finished countertop is cut or altered on-site, the newly exposed, and treated by you areas, will not perfectly match the rest of the surface, leading to noticeable patchiness. To ensure a smooth, even finish, we recommend completing all size adjustments and/or cutouts first, then applying the protective treatment of your choice to the entire surface for a flawless result.

Professional Finishing – if  you want to receive your solid wood countertop ready to be used immediately (please note this option is only suitable for countertops that do not require on-site cut-outs or size adjustments), our in-house finishing service is the right choice. We offer 3 protective finishing options. Our natural oil finish enhances the wood’s natural depth and autumnal tones by penetrating deeper layers of timber. If you prefer to maintain the original light tones and textures, our transparent matt lacquer finish forms a barrier against damage without altering the wood’s natural appearance. For additional durability, you can also upgrade l to our signature, maintenance free waterproof protection (additional costs apply).

Fine sanding + subtle sheen oil

The unique properties of oil gradually enrich the wood’s grain, deepening its natural hues and enhancing its warm, autumnal tones.  As the oil penetrates the deeper layers of the solid wood countertop, it creates a protective effect that helps prevent damage even as the top layer naturally fades over time.

One of the key advantages of an oil finish is its easy maintenance – surface imperfections can be repaired with sanding and fresh re-application. However, oil-finished surfaces are more prone to marking from liquids, making them less suitable for kitchens, bathrooms or utility rooms.

To keep your solid wood countertop nourished and looking its best, regular re-oiling with light sanding between the coats is essential. This finish is ideal for those who appreciate the natural beauty of wood and don’t mind the upkeep required to maintain its charm.

Please note that an oil finish naturally has a subtle sheen and may bring out slightly orangey undertones in the wood – particularly in lighter species such as oak, ash, or elm.

Fine sanding + matt lacquer

Our matt lacquer finish offers natural look while providing a low-maintenance protection for solid wood countertops. As a cost-effective, water-resistant solution, it is ideal for surfaces exposed to moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms, as well as solid wood tables and breakfast bars.

We offer our lacquer in a matt finish as standard, unless a gloss finish is specifically requested. However, we would advise against opting for gloss finish – it tends to highlight every mark and scratch, making it a less forgiving choice over time.

Unlike oil, which deepens the wood’s tones, matt lacquer preserves the wood’s original colour palette while adding a transparent protective layer. The matt finish not only enhances the wood’s natural beauty but also helps conceal scratches and marks, making it a practical choice for everyday use.

Fine sandding + waterproof protection + oil / lacquer – matt finish effect

live edge oak desktop by earthy timber waterproof wood protection

Our exclusive, no-maintenance waterproof protection, developed in-house by Earthy Timber, is applied in a vacuum environment –  a process unavailable anywhere else. This cutting-edge treatment provides the highest level of resistance against scratches, stains, and moisture while preserving the natural beauty and tactile feel of your solid wood countertop.

Designed for heavy-use surfaces such as dining tables and bathroom countertops, this advanced finish is highly resistant to water, heat, alcohol, and food acids. It also features a non-yellowing, UV-protected formula, ensuring your countertop remains flawless for years without the need for reapplication.

With its matt finish, Earthy Timber’s waterproof protection amplifies the wood’s natural grain and tones, adding depth while maintaining its organic beauty. Unlike glossy finishes that may alter the timber’s appearance, our waterproof treatment enhances the wood’s character in a subtle, authentic way.

For those seeking the ultimate protection with zero maintenance, this premium finish is available upon request for an additional cost. To add it to your order, please email us.
