Oak Window Sill – Custom Solid Oak Window Boards Handcrafted to Order

Oak window sills from Earthy Timber are crafted to your required size, to order, ensuring a perfect fit for your specific window board dimensions. This customisation not only highlights the unique beauty of each window sill but also means you only pay for window board size that you need, saving you both time and money.

Earthy Timber’s oak window sill exemplifies craftsmanship and elegance, offering a truly bespoke solution for enhancing the character of any room. These oak window boards are meticulously crafted from solid oak full stave planks, ensuring a unique aesthetic that highlights the natural beauty and grain of salvaged oak. Custom made to your precise dimensions would it be a narrow window sill or super wide window sitting, these oak window boards eliminate the hassle of modification, saving you valuable time and reducing costs.

Each solid oak window board undergoes vacuum kiln drying on-site, a process that enhances stability and longevity while preserving the wood’s stunning natural features. The result is an oak window sill that combines outstanding durability with timeless appeal, adding warmth and sophistication to your home or business. Whether you’re renovating a house or building from scratch, Earthy Timber’s custom oak window boards are designed to meet your needs and enhance your space with their distinctive beauty and superior craftsmanship.

The Craftsmanship Behind Earthy Timber’s Oak Window Sills

Handcrafted from carefully selected salvaged oak planks and vacuum kiln-dried in house, Earthy Timber’s oak window sills and oak window boards embody our commitment to quality and sustainability. Each oak window sill is meticulously crafted in-house, ensuring exceptional standards at every stage of production. Unlike mass-produced wood window sill alternatives, our process includes stringent quality control, from selecting the unique oak planks, through in-house kiln drying to applying the final finishes.

Our precision vacuum kiln-drying process reduces the wood’s moisture content below 10%, minimising the risk of warping, cracking, or twisting over time. This method ensures unparalleled stability and longevity, setting our oak window sills and oak window boards apart from others that rely on less exacting drying techniques.

At Earthy Timber, we use full length oak planks for their superior strength and visual continuity. By avoiding the smaller wood sections commonly used in standard wood window sills, we highlight the natural grain and character of each piece, creating oak window sills that are both structurally sound and visually striking.

Sourced responsibly from salvaged oak in UK and European woodlands, our salvaged trees come from National Trust Forestry Commission or  private estates, reflecting our dedication to ethical craftsmanship. With Earthy Timber’s oak window sills, you’re choosing timeless design, sustainable practices, and enduring quality to complement your home or business.

Upon request and for an additional cost, oak window sills can be crafted from a single solid oak plank rather than joined full-stave oak planks to achieve the required width. A single plank oak window sill offers a premium, high-end aesthetic, showcasing the natural beauty and full extent of the wood grain on a single oak window board.

Live Edge Window Sills or Modern Squared Window Boards – Edging Choices

Live edge oak window sills from Earthy Timber are a natural choice for homeowners seeking a unique and organic aesthetic for their windows. Live edge oak wood window sills retain the natural edges of the tree, giving them an earthy appearance. The live edge design adds character and charm to any space, creating a visually appealing focal point. An oak wood, known for its durability and strength, ensures that these live edge window sills will withstand the test of time. Additionally, the natural front edge wood grain patterns and warm tones of oak enhance the overall beauty of the custom oak wood window sills, complementing various interior styles. Whether used in traditional or contemporary settings, live edge oak wood window sills provide a touch of nature and elegance to any home.

In addition to live edge oak window sills, square edged oak window boards are a popular option for those prefering a more contemporary and uniform look. Sqaure edged or chamfered edge oak window sills feature clean, straight edges that provide a sleek and modern appearance to windows.

For those who desire a combination of both styles, part live edged oak window sills offer a unique blend of rustic and contemporary design elements, showcasing the natural live edge squared in places for a balanced aesthetic.

Live Edge Window Sill Depth Variations

Every live edge window sill is made from unique pieces of timber and retains the tree’s natural edge. As a result, the depth will vary along the entire length of the window sill and will not be uniform. The size you order refers to the nominal depth. The finished window sill will naturally include areas that are shallower and deeper than this dimension, typically within ±100 mm, although the variation may be greater or smaller depending on the natural shape of the piece of timber.

If your project has minimum or maximum depth requirements – for example, no less than 450 mm and/or no more than 550 mm, please let us know when ordering (in notes to order). We will carefully select suitable pieces of timber to ensure the live edge remains within your specified dimensional constraints.

Sanded Oak Window Sill

The sanded oak window sill is fully sanded and smoothed, ready for application of your chosen finish. This option saves you time on preparation. With a sanded oak window sill / oak window board, you have the flexibility to choose your ideal finish.

Finished Oak Window Sill

For a hassle-free option, our finished oak window sills come fully sanded and finished with your choice of oil, lacquer, or waterproof coating. Each finish brings out the oak’s natural character while offering varying levels of protection and aesthetics:

Oak Window Sill in Lacquer Finish: A clear, durable finish that preserves the wood’s light tones and natural grain, creating a smooth, long-lasting surface. This option highlights the oak window sill’s beauty without significantly altering its colour.

Oak Window Sill in Oil Finish: An oil finish penetrates deeper into the wood, enriching its tones for a warm, inviting appearance. It provides nourishment and protection, but it requires periodic reapplication to maintain its beauty and resilience.

Oak Window Sill in Premium Waterproof Finish: Available upon request at an additional cost, this high-end option provides the ultimate protection against moisture, offering superior durability and a rich, deeper colour. Perfect for areas exposed to higher levels of humidity, this finish requires no ongoing maintenance and is applied in a vacuum environment for the best results. Please note, this finish is not available for wood window sills that require size adjustments and is offered at an additional cost.

Oak Window Sill / Oak Window Board Size Adjustments

If your oak window sill / oak window board design requires size adjustment or cutouts, we recommend ordering it in the sanded-only state to ensure an even, uniform coating of finish. After completing the size adjustments, the installer can apply the wood finish on-site, ensuring a seamless look with consistent colour across the entire window sill. This approach avoids visible patches or inconsistencies in cut out areas, giving you the perfect finish.

Solid Oak Window Sills with Resin Infused Knots and Voids

One of the standout features of our solid oak window sills and oak window boards is the thoughtful use of resin infusions in open knots and voids, strategically applied to enhance their natural charm. This refined wood finishing technique not only highlights the inherent beauty of the timber but also strengthens and stabilises the material. The resin seamlessly fills gaps or “imperfections,” resulting in a smooth, durable surface with a unique aesthetic appeal.

Resin offers superior bonding properties compared to standard wood fillers, adding both functionality and visual intrigue. However, we apply it selectively, ensuring it complements the oak window sill’s overall character. In some cases, the natural beauty of open features is so striking that we preserve them untouched, letting your oak window sill’s unique personality shine through.

Oak Window Sills – FAQ

  1. Will my solid oak or walnut window sill be made from a single piece of wood?

Whether your oak window sill, walnut window sill, oak window board or walnut window board is made from a single piece depends on which product you order from the Earthy Timber Custom Online Shop.

Window Sill – Professionally Joined Solid Timber

Our solid timber window sills are crafted from solid oak boards or solid walnut boards that are edge-joined to achieve the required width. For example:

    • a 300mm wide oak window sill is typically made from up to two full-length oak boards
    • a 650mm wide oak or walnut window sill is typically made from three wide full-length boards

Each oak window board is accurately machined before being bonded in professional hydraulic presses using high-performance structural adhesives. This produces joints that are exceptionally tight and strong. Once sanded and finished, the joints are discreet and form part of a high-quality solid timber window sill. For most customers, this provides the ideal balance between appearance, strength and value.

Choosing a professionally joined solid oak wood window sill also allows much wider sizes to be produced while making responsible use of salvaged timber.

Wood Slab – Single Piece of Timber Window Board

If you require a single piece oak window sill  with no edge joints whatsoever, choose an oak wood slab instead. Each solid oak slab is cut from a single piece of salvaged timber, so the grain runs uninterrupted across the entire width.

This is the premium option and is ideal when you want the natural beauty of a single solid board without any joints.

Which option solid oak window sill should I choose?

The Earthy Timber oak window sill offers excellent value. The professionally executed joints are extremely tight, durable and visually as subtle as possible. If having a single piece of timber is important to your project, then a wood slab is the best choice, although it is naturally more expensive because wider solid slabs are considerably rarer.

  2. Can I specify minimum or maximum dimensions for a live edge window sill?

Yes. If you require a minimum and/or maximum live edge window sill depth, simply add your dimensional requirements to the order notes. We will select  suitable pieces of timber to ensure the natural live edge falls within your specified dimensional range, allowing you to enjoy the character of a genuine live edge while meeting your project’s requirements.

  3. Can I order an oak window sill to my exact size?

Yes. Every oak window sill is made to your exact length and depth. Simply enter your required dimensions when ordering, and we will manufacture your oak window board to your custom size.

Important Information about Dimensions & Natural Variations

Every solid salvaged wood countertop is individually handcrafted from carefully selected timber planks. Because every tree is unique, we do not simply manufacture to a fixed size – we carefully select the combination of boards that will create the most beautiful and visually balanced finished piece while working as close as possible to your requested dimensions.

In some cases, this may mean your countertop is manufactured slightly longer and/or wider than the dimensions requested. This is intentional and allows us to preserve the natural proportions, character, and visual impact of the timber. A small degree of oversizing is a normal part of the bespoke manufacturing process and should not be regarded as a defect.

If your project has strict dimensional requirements – for example, where the countertop must fit precisely between walls, inside a recess, or against existing cabinetry – you must let us know by adding a note in the Notes to Order section when placing your order. Please specify your minimum and/or maximum acceptable dimensions, or clearly state if the dimensions must be exact. If no such instructions are provided, we will assume there is reasonable dimensional flexibility and will manufacture your countertop as close as possible to your requested dimensions while selecting the most suitable timber to achieve the best overall visual result.

If you choose a live edge or part live edge countertop, please remember that the width will naturally fluctuate along its length, following the original profile of the tree. These natural variations are one of the defining features of genuine live edge timber and are what make every piece completely unique.

If your live edge or part live edge project is restricted by width, you must specify the minimum and/or maximum acceptable width in the Notes to Order when placing your order. If no width restrictions are provided, we will assume you are happy for us to determine the final width, prioritising the natural shape of the timber and the overall visual impact of your live edge or part live edge piece, while keeping the finished countertop as close as possible to your requested size.

Finishing Options for Solid Wood Countertops

Unfinished (Raw) – This is our most cost-effective option and represents a natural stage in the countertop’s craftsmanship journey. The unfinished wooden countertop is produced to the same high structural and material standards as all of our finished pieces and is delivered in a completely unfinished state that requires substantial additional work before installation and use.

Delivered unsanded and untreated, this option features open knots, fissures, and natural voids, along with unfinished, non-smooth edges. As this timber is sourced from salvaged trees, these characteristics are to be expected and form part of its rustic charm.

Any filling of knots or voids –  using wood filler, resin, or alternative materials – is entirely at the client’s discretion and should be guided by personal aesthetic preference and intended use. Some clients choose to retain the open features to preserve the timber’s natural, rustic character, while others prefer a smoother, more uniform surface. Extensive sanding, surface preparation, filling (if desired), and the application of a protective finish are all the responsibility of the client. This worktop is not suitable for immediate use upon delivery.

This option is best suited to customers who have the tools, experience, and time to complete the finishing process themselves. It is ideal for hands-on individuals looking to fully customise their solid wood countertop from scratch, save on finishing costs, and create a truly unique piece tailored to their space.

Please note: tables and desks are only available as fully finished, fully protected products.

Fine Sanding Only (Ready for application of the protective finish of your choice) – Offered at a modestly higher cost than our raw (unfinished) option, the sanded countertop is supplied with a fully sanded, smooth surface that is ready for immediate application of the protective finish of your choice. Prominent natural features are professionally filled using resin or organic fillers to enhance visual appearance while preserving the wood’s natural character. Select features may be intentionally left open where they contribute to the piece’s overall aesthetic and natural charm. This option significantly reduces preparation time and is ideal for clients seeking a refined, semi-finished surface without the labour associated with full raw preparation.

Important note for the countertops that require on-site modifications – if your countertop requires on-site size adjustments or cutouts, you should choose either ‘unfinished’ or ‘sanded only’ option. This is because any pre-applied protective finish will be disrupted during your modifications, resulting in visible inconsistencies. If a pre-finished countertop is cut or altered on-site, the newly exposed, and treated by you areas, will not perfectly match the rest of the surface, leading to noticeable patchiness. To ensure a smooth, even finish, we recommend completing all size adjustments and/or cutouts first, then applying the protective treatment of your choice to the entire surface for a flawless result.

Professional Finishing – if  you want to receive your solid wood countertop ready to be used immediately (please note this option is only suitable for countertops that do not require on-site cut-outs or size adjustments), our in-house finishing service is the right choice. We offer 3 protective finishing options. Our natural oil finish enhances the wood’s natural depth and autumnal tones by penetrating deeper layers of timber. If you prefer to maintain the original light tones and textures, our transparent matt lacquer finish forms a barrier against damage without altering the wood’s natural appearance. For additional durability, you can also upgrade l to our signature, maintenance free waterproof protection (additional costs apply).

Fine sanding + subtle sheen oil

The unique properties of oil gradually enrich the wood’s grain, deepening its natural hues and enhancing its warm, autumnal tones.  As the oil penetrates the deeper layers of the solid wood countertop, it creates a protective effect that helps prevent damage even as the top layer naturally fades over time.

One of the key advantages of an oil finish is its easy maintenance – surface imperfections can be repaired with sanding and fresh re-application. However, oil-finished surfaces are more prone to marking from liquids, making them less suitable for kitchens, bathrooms or utility rooms.

To keep your solid wood countertop nourished and looking its best, regular re-oiling with light sanding between the coats is essential. This finish is ideal for those who appreciate the natural beauty of wood and don’t mind the upkeep required to maintain its charm.

Please note that an oil finish naturally has a subtle sheen and may bring out slightly orangey undertones in the wood – particularly in lighter species such as oak, ash, or elm.

Fine sanding + matt lacquer

Our matt lacquer finish offers natural look while providing a low-maintenance protection for solid wood countertops. As a cost-effective, water-resistant solution, it is ideal for surfaces exposed to moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms, as well as solid wood tables and breakfast bars.

We offer our lacquer in a matt finish as standard, unless a gloss finish is specifically requested. However, we would advise against opting for gloss finish – it tends to highlight every mark and scratch, making it a less forgiving choice over time.

Unlike oil, which deepens the wood’s tones, matt lacquer preserves the wood’s original colour palette while adding a transparent protective layer. The matt finish not only enhances the wood’s natural beauty but also helps conceal scratches and marks, making it a practical choice for everyday use.

Fine sandding + waterproof protection + oil / lacquer – matt finish effect

live edge oak desktop by earthy timber waterproof wood protection

Our exclusive, no-maintenance waterproof protection, developed in-house by Earthy Timber, is applied in a vacuum environment –  a process unavailable anywhere else. This cutting-edge treatment provides the highest level of resistance against scratches, stains, and moisture while preserving the natural beauty and tactile feel of your solid wood countertop.

Designed for heavy-use surfaces such as dining tables and bathroom countertops, this advanced finish is highly resistant to water, heat, alcohol, and food acids. It also features a non-yellowing, UV-protected formula, ensuring your countertop remains flawless for years without the need for reapplication.

With its matt finish, Earthy Timber’s waterproof protection amplifies the wood’s natural grain and tones, adding depth while maintaining its organic beauty. Unlike glossy finishes that may alter the timber’s appearance, our waterproof treatment enhances the wood’s character in a subtle, authentic way.

For those seeking the ultimate protection with zero maintenance, this premium finish is available upon request for an additional cost. To add it to your order, please email us.

4 reviews for Oak Window Sills and Oak Window Boards

  1. Dani

I ordered four oak shelves from Earthy Timber early this year and have just ordered four more.

The wood is simply precious and delicately crafted to showcase and preserve its natural beauty. I couldn’t be happier!

The shelves were ready to collect earlier than quoted, which I was delighted to hear, and the service – this time and the first time we ordered – has been personal and professional from the start. Anna has been so helpful and accommodating, kind, warm and genuinely shared my joy when I saw the beautiful creations of wood.

I am so in love with these oak shelves! They are the perfect home for my books and a stunning centrepiece of my living room. Thank you!

  2. Ben

I ordered 22 window sills in various sizes for a new build, and I’m very impressed with the quality and the high-end feel they bring to the property. As a property developer, I know the final touches can make a big difference in how much a client is willing to pay, and these solid wood sills worked perfectly for us.
We also ordered an oak breakfast bar with a live edge front, along with a set of shelves and basin tops for the bathrooms. Everything arrived in excellent quality, and I’m really happy with how it all turned out.

  3. Maya

We had live edge oak window sills created for the renovated areas of our barn conversion, and they completely transformed the spaces. The Earthy Timber wood window sill price calculator made it easy to enter bespoke sizes, and we received exactly what we paid for.

We initially ordered 16 custom window sills for the whole house, and as construction continues, we’ll be ordering more matching pieces. Earthy Timber is perfect for this project, their work complements the rustic charm we’re aiming for, and because our home is a listed building, the sills meet the requirements to preserve its original character.

  4. Bryan & Amelie

High end solid oak worktops, shelves, and window sills for our Cotswold cottage kitchen – exactly what we had been searching for.

We had been looking a long time to find solid wood countertops that truly feel substantial and high quality, while also being characterful enough to complement our over 150-year old oak beams. For a period property like ours, we wanted authentic wide plank solid oak worktops, not generic narrow strips or small block offered by our designer.

When we came across Earthy Timber’s website and their bespoke, handcrafted worktops, it almost felt too good to be true. The online calculator made it incredibly easy to specify exact sizes, and the level of craftsmanship is outstanding – the joints are barely visible, and everything feels solid, weighty, and beautifully made.

The matching oak window sills for the whole house are another highlight – all made precisely to our required dimensions, with different depths and lengths. The flexibility in bespoke sizing is excellent.

Service from Jason was fantastic from start to finish. Delivery was handled in-house with regular updates, which made the whole process smooth and stress free.

A perfect experience overall – exactly what we were hoping for.
