A light wood sideboard, light wood TV unit, light wood dresser or light wood chest of drawers countertop from Earthy Timber is produced from carefully selected salvaged elm planks, chosen for their pale honey tones, subtle golden warmth, and distinctive interlocking grain. Elm is naturally lighter and cooler in appearance than oak, offering biscuit, straw, and soft amber shades that brighten interiors while maintaining visible depth and texture.

Light Wood Furniture Countertops Directly from the Manufacturer

Earthy Timber manufactures light wood TV unit worktops, light wood chest of drawers tops, light wood dresser tops, light wood sideboard tops from tree to finished piece in house. We are in control of timber selection, kiln drying, machining, jointing, and finishing. Each elm sideboard, elm TV unit or elm chest of drawers top is produced to order from raw, salvaged timber – not from prefabricated panels.

Full plank (full stave) construction is used throughout. Wide elm planks are carefully selected and jointed to allow uninterrupted grain flow along the full length of the light wood TV unit, light wood chest of drawers and light wood dresser top. This avoids the fragmented appearance associated with small block or finger-jointed panels and preserves the natural movement and character of the timber.

Every elm furniture top is made to size for a precise fit on new or existing cabinetry.

Salvaged Elm, Light Hardwood Tops by Earthy Timber – Strength, Stability and Distinctive Pale Tones

Our light wood sideboard tops, light wood chest of drawers tops, light wood TV unit tops, light wood dresser tops, and other light wood furniture surfaces are handcrafted by Earthy Timber from salvaged elm trees sourced across the UK and Europe. We select elm wood for its density, defined grain structure, and natural figuring – qualities not found in fast grown timber or engineered panel products.

Elm wood is structurally tough, naturally shock resistant, and defined by its distinctive interlocking grain and flowing pattern movement. Salvaged elm frequently presents strong figuring, mineral streaks, knots, and occasional voids. Where necessary, these features are filled with resin or natural wood filler to ensure structural performance while maintaining natural appearance.

Every light wood sideboard, light wood TV unit, and light wood chest of drawers top we handcraft retains the visual record of the tree it came from. No two elm worktops are identical; individuality is inherent in the material and preserved through our process. Each elm furniture top is individually handcrafted from solid timber – not veneer, not laminate, not engineered panels, and not assembled from small offcuts. This is genuine, full stave hardwood, built for structural integrity, visual authenticity, and longevity measured in generations.

Light Wood Aesthetic – Why Choose Elm

Elm offers a naturally light hardwood appearance with flowing grain that brings depth and subtle character to every piece. Its tonal range spans pale honey, soft gold, light caramel, and muted wheat shades, providing brightness while maintaining the texture and authenticity of real timber.

At Earthy Timber, we select elm for its balance of lightness, warmth, and structural integrity. Light wood elm tops are particularly well suited for interiors that benefit from natural brightness and texture, including Scandinavian-inspired living rooms, contemporary minimalist dining spaces, airy bedrooms, and neutral-toned hallways. They also work exceptionally well in spaces where contrast between clean furniture lines and organic timber surfaces is desired, such as modern kitchens, boutique offices, or commercial interiors looking for natural authenticity.

A light wood sideboard, light wood TV unit, light wood chest of drawers or light wood dresser top introduces warmth without darkening the room. It enhances natural light, complements pale or neutral palettes, and creates a calm, understated elegance while preserving the visual and tactile appeal of real, handcrafted hardwood.

Full Length Plank (Full Stave) Construction for Elm Sideboard, Elm TV Unit, or Elm Chest of Drawers Countertops

At Earthy Timber, every light wood sideboard, light wood TV unit, light wood chest of drawers or light wood media cabinet top is crafted from full length, wide planks  of elm, carefully selected and jointed to preserve uninterrupted grain flow along the entire surface. We do not use narrow strip lamination, or prefabricated panels. All our elm furniture tops are handcrafted to your requested size, to order.

Full stave construction gives each elm countertop inherent structural stability and a cohesive, authentic appearance that only real timber can provide. Combined with our controlled vacuum kiln drying process, each elm plank is brought to the ideal moisture content, minimising movement and ensuring dimensional stability. This careful approach results in a durable, stable, and visually striking light furniture top built to last for generations.

Matching Elm Timber Across Multiple Pieces

When multiple elm furniture are ordered – for example, an elm sideboard top with matching elm shelving or an elm table – timber can be selected from the same batch where possible. This ensures consistent tone and grain across all pieces. All machining and finishing are carried out in house at Earthy Timber, maintaining a cohesive appearance and upholding our high standards of quality and craftsmanship.

Alternative Light Hardwoods if Elm is Unavailable

We work exclusively with salvaged trees, so the availability of timber for production is subject to sustainable sourcing. If suitable elm wood is not available, we can offer carefully selected alternative light hardwoods that deliver a comparable look and character.

  • Ash – pale cream to light biscuit tones with strong straight grain

  • Sycamore – very light, clean appearance with expressive figuring

Both alternatives offer durability and brightness comparable to elm, while maintaining the integrity of solid hardwood construction.

Why Choose Earthy Timber?

Every light wood sideboard top, light wood dresser, light wood media unit, light wood TV cabinet or light wood chest of drawers worktop from Earthy Timber is crafted from salvaged hardwood. Each elm plank is kiln dried to a precise, controlled moisture content to ensure dimensional stability and performance.

All pieces are constructed from full length elm wood planks, machined and finished entirely in house. This allows us to maintain complete control over quality, fit, and finish. Every light wood countertop is made to your desired size, to order, ensuring a precise, bespoke solution tailored to your furniture.

We do not use veneers, or mass produced panels. Each solid elm worktop retains the natural integrity, grain character, and structural strength of the real timber, producing a light toned, light wood surface that is built to last and to age gracefully over time. Earthy Timber’s process guarantees consistency, durability, and authenticity in every piece.

Important Information about Dimensions & Natural Variations

Every solid salvaged wood countertop is individually handcrafted from carefully selected timber planks. Because every tree is unique, we do not simply manufacture to a fixed size – we carefully select the combination of boards that will create the most beautiful and visually balanced finished piece while working as close as possible to your requested dimensions.

In some cases, this may mean your countertop is manufactured slightly longer and/or wider than the dimensions requested. This is intentional and allows us to preserve the natural proportions, character, and visual impact of the timber. A small degree of oversizing is a normal part of the bespoke manufacturing process and should not be regarded as a defect.

If your project has strict dimensional requirements – for example, where the countertop must fit precisely between walls, inside a recess, or against existing cabinetry – you must let us know by adding a note in the Notes to Order section when placing your order. Please specify your minimum and/or maximum acceptable dimensions, or clearly state if the dimensions must be exact. If no such instructions are provided, we will assume there is reasonable dimensional flexibility and will manufacture your countertop as close as possible to your requested dimensions while selecting the most suitable timber to achieve the best overall visual result.

If you choose a live edge or part live edge countertop, please remember that the width will naturally fluctuate along its length, following the original profile of the tree. These natural variations are one of the defining features of genuine live edge timber and are what make every piece completely unique.

If your live edge or part live edge project is restricted by width, you must specify the minimum and/or maximum acceptable width in the Notes to Order when placing your order. If no width restrictions are provided, we will assume you are happy for us to determine the final width, prioritising the natural shape of the timber and the overall visual impact of your live edge or part live edge piece, while keeping the finished countertop as close as possible to your requested size.

Finishing Options for Solid Wood Countertops

Unfinished (Raw) – This is our most cost-effective option and represents a natural stage in the countertop’s craftsmanship journey. The unfinished wooden countertop is produced to the same high structural and material standards as all of our finished pieces and is delivered in a completely unfinished state that requires substantial additional work before installation and use.

Delivered unsanded and untreated, this option features open knots, fissures, and natural voids, along with unfinished, non-smooth edges. As this timber is sourced from salvaged trees, these characteristics are to be expected and form part of its rustic charm.

Any filling of knots or voids –  using wood filler, resin, or alternative materials – is entirely at the client’s discretion and should be guided by personal aesthetic preference and intended use. Some clients choose to retain the open features to preserve the timber’s natural, rustic character, while others prefer a smoother, more uniform surface. Extensive sanding, surface preparation, filling (if desired), and the application of a protective finish are all the responsibility of the client. This worktop is not suitable for immediate use upon delivery.

This option is best suited to customers who have the tools, experience, and time to complete the finishing process themselves. It is ideal for hands-on individuals looking to fully customise their solid wood countertop from scratch, save on finishing costs, and create a truly unique piece tailored to their space.

Please note: tables and desks are only available as fully finished, fully protected products.

Fine Sanding Only (Ready for application of the protective finish of your choice) – Offered at a modestly higher cost than our raw (unfinished) option, the sanded countertop is supplied with a fully sanded, smooth surface that is ready for immediate application of the protective finish of your choice. Prominent natural features are professionally filled using resin or organic fillers to enhance visual appearance while preserving the wood’s natural character. Select features may be intentionally left open where they contribute to the piece’s overall aesthetic and natural charm. This option significantly reduces preparation time and is ideal for clients seeking a refined, semi-finished surface without the labour associated with full raw preparation.

Important note for the countertops that require on-site modifications – if your countertop requires on-site size adjustments or cutouts, you should choose either ‘unfinished’ or ‘sanded only’ option. This is because any pre-applied protective finish will be disrupted during your modifications, resulting in visible inconsistencies. If a pre-finished countertop is cut or altered on-site, the newly exposed, and treated by you areas, will not perfectly match the rest of the surface, leading to noticeable patchiness. To ensure a smooth, even finish, we recommend completing all size adjustments and/or cutouts first, then applying the protective treatment of your choice to the entire surface for a flawless result.

Professional Finishing – if  you want to receive your solid wood countertop ready to be used immediately (please note this option is only suitable for countertops that do not require on-site cut-outs or size adjustments), our in-house finishing service is the right choice. We offer 3 protective finishing options. Our natural oil finish enhances the wood’s natural depth and autumnal tones by penetrating deeper layers of timber. If you prefer to maintain the original light tones and textures, our transparent matt lacquer finish forms a barrier against damage without altering the wood’s natural appearance. For additional durability, you can also upgrade l to our signature, maintenance free waterproof protection (additional costs apply).

Fine sanding + subtle sheen oil

The unique properties of oil gradually enrich the wood’s grain, deepening its natural hues and enhancing its warm, autumnal tones.  As the oil penetrates the deeper layers of the solid wood countertop, it creates a protective effect that helps prevent damage even as the top layer naturally fades over time.

One of the key advantages of an oil finish is its easy maintenance – surface imperfections can be repaired with sanding and fresh re-application. However, oil-finished surfaces are more prone to marking from liquids, making them less suitable for kitchens, bathrooms or utility rooms.

To keep your solid wood countertop nourished and looking its best, regular re-oiling with light sanding between the coats is essential. This finish is ideal for those who appreciate the natural beauty of wood and don’t mind the upkeep required to maintain its charm.

Please note that an oil finish naturally has a subtle sheen and may bring out slightly orangey undertones in the wood – particularly in lighter species such as oak, ash, or elm.

Fine sanding + matt lacquer

Our matt lacquer finish offers natural look while providing a low-maintenance protection for solid wood countertops. As a cost-effective, water-resistant solution, it is ideal for surfaces exposed to moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms, as well as solid wood tables and breakfast bars.

We offer our lacquer in a matt finish as standard, unless a gloss finish is specifically requested. However, we would advise against opting for gloss finish – it tends to highlight every mark and scratch, making it a less forgiving choice over time.

Unlike oil, which deepens the wood’s tones, matt lacquer preserves the wood’s original colour palette while adding a transparent protective layer. The matt finish not only enhances the wood’s natural beauty but also helps conceal scratches and marks, making it a practical choice for everyday use.

Fine sandding + waterproof protection + oil / lacquer – matt finish effect

live edge oak desktop by earthy timber waterproof wood protection

Our exclusive, no-maintenance waterproof protection, developed in-house by Earthy Timber, is applied in a vacuum environment –  a process unavailable anywhere else. This cutting-edge treatment provides the highest level of resistance against scratches, stains, and moisture while preserving the natural beauty and tactile feel of your solid wood countertop.

Designed for heavy-use surfaces such as dining tables and bathroom countertops, this advanced finish is highly resistant to water, heat, alcohol, and food acids. It also features a non-yellowing, UV-protected formula, ensuring your countertop remains flawless for years without the need for reapplication.

With its matt finish, Earthy Timber’s waterproof protection amplifies the wood’s natural grain and tones, adding depth while maintaining its organic beauty. Unlike glossy finishes that may alter the timber’s appearance, our waterproof treatment enhances the wood’s character in a subtle, authentic way.

For those seeking the ultimate protection with zero maintenance, this premium finish is available upon request for an additional cost. To add it to your order, please email us.
