Characterful Walnut Table Tops by Earthy Timber

Handcrafted Solid Walnut Table Tops – Direct from the Maker

At Earthy Timber, we create authentic solid walnut table tops that celebrate the raw beauty and natural strength of walnut wood. Each walnut table top is handcrafted to order from genuine walnut timber  – not veneered or engineered wood – offering a timeless surface that feels grounded, tactile, and full of life. Designed for everyday use, our wide plank solid wood walnut table tops combine practical durability, natural appeal, making them perfect for homes, studios, and professional spaces alike.

Every walnut table top is shaped to highlight the character and individuality of walnut wood. We take care to retain the natural features of the wood while ensuring the surface remains beautiful and functional. Unlike mass produced furniture, we don’t aim for uniformity; instead, we preserve the grain flow, natural knots, and colour transitions that define real walnut timber. Knots and voids are filled with resin or natural wood filler where necessary, but selected features are often left in their natural state to tell the story of the tree’s growth.

Custom Walnut Table Tops Made to Your Dimensions

Every Earthy Timber walnut table top is handcrafted to order, customised to your required dimensions. This made to measure approach allows us to select each walnut plank specifically for your project, ensuring that the grain patterns, natural features, and chosen size come together to form a harmonious, visually balanced walnut table top. These are not pre-made wood table top surfaces – each walnut table top is created individually for you.

Whether you need a small characterful walnut table top for a compact walnut kitchen table or walnut coffee table, a large statement walnut table top for a dining space, or a solid walnut conference table top for a meeting room, we handcraft every solid walnut wood table top to the size you specify.

Use our online instant bespoke walnut table top calculator to enter your chosen dimensions. The proportions of the timber will be respected to create a beautifully balanced walnut table top and ensure a perfect fit for your space.

If you prefer the lighter tones of oak or elm, our oak table top calculator or elm oak table top calculator may be an ideal alternative.

How Many Planks will be Used to Create Your Custom Walnut Table Top?

We work with wide, salvaged walnut planks, carefully joined to create a natural and harmonious whole. For example, a walnut table top measuring 1000mm in width will typically be crafted from three to four planks, while a 700mm wide walnut table top will be made from two to three wide walnut planks.

When you order a solid walnut table top from Earthy Timber, you pay only for the dimensions you require. Each walnut table top is handcrafted to size, not simply cut down from a larger walnut worktop – a significant difference in both appearance and quality.

Our walnut table tops are beautifully balanced, with wide planks that flow together in natural harmony. Each natural walnut table topbsurface is alive with unique grain patterns, knots, and organic features.

Every Earthy Timber walnut table top is an honest piece of solid wood, rich in character – something no engineered material or uniform plantation-grown timber can replicate.

Walnut Table Top Thickness Options

At Earthy Timber, we offer genuine solid walnut table tops in thicknesses that are rare in today’s market. Our standard options include 40mm thick walnut table tops, 50mm thick walnut table tops and 55mm walnut table tops – substantial, high-end chunky walnut table top dimensions that most suppliers simply cannot produce. For lighter applications, such as sit-stand desk tops, or modern dining tables we also offer a 30mm walnut desk tops and walnut table tops which provide the strength of solid walnut wood with a slimmer profile.

Achieving finished walnut thicknesses of 40mm, 50mm or 55mm requires starting with extra-thick walnut slabs of around 75 mm. During the milling and stabilisation process, a significant amount of material must be removed to ensure the final walnut board is structurally sound, flat, and perfectly calibrated.

This is where our in-house vacuum kiln drying becomes essential. Thick wood slabs cannot be reliably dried in conventional kilns. Vacuum kiln drying allows us to stabilise these heavy, wide walnut wood slabs safely and uniformly – a capability that makes Earthy Timber uniquely positioned to offer such robust, chunky walnut table tops.

Earthy Timber walnut table tops are solid, stable, and beautifully substantial, with a presence that truly sets them apart. As demonstrated in our past projects, they exceed standard market offerings.

Natural Wood Table Top with Modern Functionality

Our real wood walnut table tops are designed with a modern appreciation for simplicity, yet they remain deeply connected to nature. The earthy tones, rich grain patterns, and soft textures of natural walnut wood bring calm and warmth into any room. Every walnut table top is unique, shaped by the organic movement of the wood grain and finished to reveal its natural depth and authenticity. These solid walnut countertop pieces suit a variety of interiors – from rustic cottages and Scandinavian-style homes to modern apartments that value natural materials and honest craftsmanship.

Sustainable Salavaged Walnut Timber & Zero-Waste Craftsmanship

Earthy Timber’s walnut table tops are crafted with a genuine respect for nature. We work exclusively with salvaged walnut, giving new purpose to timber that might otherwise be discarded. By embracing the walnut wood’s natural character and organic imperfections, we honour this beautiful natural material. This approach reflects our zero-waste philosophy and supports the protection of living woodlands by making full use of reclaimed timber.

Every natural walnut table top we handcraft is entirely one of a kind. You’ll find variations in colour, texture, and grain – from swirling chocolate browns to soft honey undertones. Naturally occurring knots, mineral streaks, and organic markings are not defects; they are part of the tree’s history, preserved to celebrate the wood’s journey.

Our Own Wood Yard

At Earthy Timber, every walnut table top begins its journey in our own wood yard, surrounded by carefully selected stacks of English and European walnut. All of our timber is salvaged, giving new life to wood that might otherwise go to waste. This sustainable approach not only protects the environment but also imbues each walnut table top, walnut dining table, or solid walnut wood worktop with unique character and history.

Because we control the entire process, we never rely on pre-cut or pre-selected timber. Instead, we handpick each log, mill it in-house, and guide it through a careful seasoning process. Every plank of reclaimed walnut is air dried for years, allowing the walnut wood to settle naturally, before being transferred to our vacuum kiln for precise drying and stabilisation. This meticulous process ensures that your walnut table top is both beautiful and structurally sound.

The Unique Character of Walnut Wood

English walnut is prized not only for its deep, rich chocolate-brown tones with light silvery streaks but also for its remarkable grain variety and natural textures. At Earthy Timber, we celebrate its organic features – swirling grain patterns, strong colour variations, mineral streaks, and characterful knots – all of which make every walnut table top one-of-a-kind. Walnut also ages gracefully, developing a soft, warm patina over time that enhances its rustic charm. Its natural durability, stability, and tactile surface makes it ideal for heirloom quality walnut breakfast bar tops, walnut table, or bathroom vanity top, combining practicality with the inherent beauty of real walnut wood.

In-House Vacuum Kiln Drying for Strength and Stability

To ensure that every solid walnut table top delivers long-term structural stability, we vacuum kiln dry all our timber in-house using controlled, small batch cycles. Vacuum kiln drying allows moisture to be removed at significantly lower and controlled temperatures than in conventional kilns, reducing internal stresses within the wood and preventing other defects associated with uneven or rapid timber drying.

Our precise process of vacuum kiln drying ensures uniform moisture content from the core to the surface of the walnut slab, which is critical for large, wide, chunky wood boards used in walnut table tops. When timber reaches 10% or lower equilibrium moisture content throughout its cross-section, the risk of warping, cupping, twisting, internal tension, and structural failure is reduced to 0.01% figures.

Because we manage the entire drying process internally – rather than relying on external saw mill suppliers – we eliminate the common industry issues of inconsistent moisture levels, insufficient drying time, and incorrect kiln schedules that often result in unstable timber. Our vacuum kiln dried walnut behaves predictably and maintains dimensional stability in real world environments, including heated indoor spaces where humidity levels can fluctuate significantly.

In practical terms, this means every Earthy Timber’s  walnut table top begins with wood that is fully stabilised and structurally strong. You can learn more about our advanced vacuum kiln-drying process on our Earthy Timber Luxury website.

Edge Options for Walnut Table Tops

We offer several edge profiles to reflect your preferred aesthetic and how you want to experience the solid walnut wood table top:

Live Edge Walnut Table Top

Our live edge walnut table tops retain the original contours of the tree’s outer shape, with the bark removed and edges smoothed by hand, offering a truly organic edge that connects your walnut table top to its natural source. Each live edge walnut table top is unique, shaped by the way the tree grew. We ask for your preferred minimum and maximum width of the walnut table top to ensure the live edge fits your table base or desk frame perfectly. If no measurements are provided, we will allow the wood to flow freely (but practically) within its natural range.

Mixed Edge Walnut Table Top

A mixed edge walnut table top combines the authenticity of a live edge with the precision of a straight edge. This balanced design is perfect for those who want a hint of natural irregularity with a slightly more structured look. The organic curves of the live edge walnut table top are balanced by sections of clean, square cuts, giving you the warmth of walnut with a touch of modern practicality. Because part square , part live edge table tops follow in sections the natural outline of the tree, the depth of your walnut table top can vary. This natural fluctuation, usually within a 100mm range, is part of what makes the mixed edge walnut table top so special – it highlights the raw, organic character of walnut and ensures your walnut table top is truly one of a kind.

Square Edge Walnut Table Top

Our square edge walnut table tops feature crisp, planed edges for a clean, classic look while still highlighting the natural wood grain. This style, subtly softened by hand, suits modern interiors that value the honesty of real wood but prefer a refined, straightforward outline.

Finishing Options for Walnut Table Tops

A professionally finished walnut table top from Earthy Timber comes fully treated and ready to use:

Walnut Table Top in Lacquer Finish – Provides reliable protection while keeping the wood’s natural appearance. Our matt lacquer shields against moisture and wear.

Walnut Table Top in Oil Finish – Nourishes the wood and accentuates its grain, giving the walnut a rich, natural glow. This breathable finish ages gracefully and needs to be refreshed on the regular basis over time, allowing your walnut table top to develop a beautiful, lived-in patina. Oil finish requires regular re-application.

Walnut Table Top in Matt Waterproof Finish (Optional, additional charges apply) – Applied in a controlled vacuum environment, our waterproof finish adds durable protection for surfaces exposed to spills or heavy use. It maintains the matte, tactile feel of natural wood while offering a practical, maintenance-free surface.

Table Bases

If you prefer a complete walnut dining table or walnut river table rather than a walnut table top only, we produce bases and table legs that are precisely calibrated to the dimensions, type of construction and weight of your walnut table top. This ensures a structurally sound, stable, and well-balanced walnut table or walnut river table, with the entire construction engineered and guaranteed by us.

Because each walnut table is made to order, we can create custom bases at your preferred height. Every walnut table is built to fit your space, and your way of working or dining.

If you already have an existing base, that is absolutely fine – we can supply the walnut table top on its own. However, it is your responsibility to ensure that your legs or frame are structurally suitable, correctly sized, and capable of supporting a solid walnut wood table top.

Important Information about Dimensions & Natural Variations

Every solid salvaged wood countertop is individually handcrafted from carefully selected timber planks. Because every tree is unique, we do not simply manufacture to a fixed size – we carefully select the combination of boards that will create the most beautiful and visually balanced finished piece while working as close as possible to your requested dimensions.

In some cases, this may mean your countertop is manufactured slightly longer and/or wider than the dimensions requested. This is intentional and allows us to preserve the natural proportions, character, and visual impact of the timber. A small degree of oversizing is a normal part of the bespoke manufacturing process and should not be regarded as a defect.

If your project has strict dimensional requirements – for example, where the countertop must fit precisely between walls, inside a recess, or against existing cabinetry – you must let us know by adding a note in the Notes to Order section when placing your order. Please specify your minimum and/or maximum acceptable dimensions, or clearly state if the dimensions must be exact. If no such instructions are provided, we will assume there is reasonable dimensional flexibility and will manufacture your countertop as close as possible to your requested dimensions while selecting the most suitable timber to achieve the best overall visual result.

If you choose a live edge or part live edge countertop, please remember that the width will naturally fluctuate along its length, following the original profile of the tree. These natural variations are one of the defining features of genuine live edge timber and are what make every piece completely unique.

If your live edge or part live edge project is restricted by width, you must specify the minimum and/or maximum acceptable width in the Notes to Order when placing your order. If no width restrictions are provided, we will assume you are happy for us to determine the final width, prioritising the natural shape of the timber and the overall visual impact of your live edge or part live edge piece, while keeping the finished countertop as close as possible to your requested size.

Finishing Options for Solid Wood Countertops

Unfinished (Raw) – This is our most cost-effective option and represents a natural stage in the countertop’s craftsmanship journey. The unfinished wooden countertop is produced to the same high structural and material standards as all of our finished pieces and is delivered in a completely unfinished state that requires substantial additional work before installation and use.

Delivered unsanded and untreated, this option features open knots, fissures, and natural voids, along with unfinished, non-smooth edges. As this timber is sourced from salvaged trees, these characteristics are to be expected and form part of its rustic charm.

Any filling of knots or voids –  using wood filler, resin, or alternative materials – is entirely at the client’s discretion and should be guided by personal aesthetic preference and intended use. Some clients choose to retain the open features to preserve the timber’s natural, rustic character, while others prefer a smoother, more uniform surface. Extensive sanding, surface preparation, filling (if desired), and the application of a protective finish are all the responsibility of the client. This worktop is not suitable for immediate use upon delivery.

This option is best suited to customers who have the tools, experience, and time to complete the finishing process themselves. It is ideal for hands-on individuals looking to fully customise their solid wood countertop from scratch, save on finishing costs, and create a truly unique piece tailored to their space.

Please note: tables and desks are only available as fully finished, fully protected products.

Fine Sanding Only (Ready for application of the protective finish of your choice) – Offered at a modestly higher cost than our raw (unfinished) option, the sanded countertop is supplied with a fully sanded, smooth surface that is ready for immediate application of the protective finish of your choice. Prominent natural features are professionally filled using resin or organic fillers to enhance visual appearance while preserving the wood’s natural character. Select features may be intentionally left open where they contribute to the piece’s overall aesthetic and natural charm. This option significantly reduces preparation time and is ideal for clients seeking a refined, semi-finished surface without the labour associated with full raw preparation.

Important note for the countertops that require on-site modifications – if your countertop requires on-site size adjustments or cutouts, you should choose either ‘unfinished’ or ‘sanded only’ option. This is because any pre-applied protective finish will be disrupted during your modifications, resulting in visible inconsistencies. If a pre-finished countertop is cut or altered on-site, the newly exposed, and treated by you areas, will not perfectly match the rest of the surface, leading to noticeable patchiness. To ensure a smooth, even finish, we recommend completing all size adjustments and/or cutouts first, then applying the protective treatment of your choice to the entire surface for a flawless result.

Professional Finishing – if  you want to receive your solid wood countertop ready to be used immediately (please note this option is only suitable for countertops that do not require on-site cut-outs or size adjustments), our in-house finishing service is the right choice. We offer 3 protective finishing options. Our natural oil finish enhances the wood’s natural depth and autumnal tones by penetrating deeper layers of timber. If you prefer to maintain the original light tones and textures, our transparent matt lacquer finish forms a barrier against damage without altering the wood’s natural appearance. For additional durability, you can also upgrade l to our signature, maintenance free waterproof protection (additional costs apply).

Fine sanding + subtle sheen oil

The unique properties of oil gradually enrich the wood’s grain, deepening its natural hues and enhancing its warm, autumnal tones.  As the oil penetrates the deeper layers of the solid wood countertop, it creates a protective effect that helps prevent damage even as the top layer naturally fades over time.

One of the key advantages of an oil finish is its easy maintenance – surface imperfections can be repaired with sanding and fresh re-application. However, oil-finished surfaces are more prone to marking from liquids, making them less suitable for kitchens, bathrooms or utility rooms.

To keep your solid wood countertop nourished and looking its best, regular re-oiling with light sanding between the coats is essential. This finish is ideal for those who appreciate the natural beauty of wood and don’t mind the upkeep required to maintain its charm.

Please note that an oil finish naturally has a subtle sheen and may bring out slightly orangey undertones in the wood – particularly in lighter species such as oak, ash, or elm.

Fine sanding + matt lacquer

Our matt lacquer finish offers natural look while providing a low-maintenance protection for solid wood countertops. As a cost-effective, water-resistant solution, it is ideal for surfaces exposed to moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms, as well as solid wood tables and breakfast bars.

We offer our lacquer in a matt finish as standard, unless a gloss finish is specifically requested. However, we would advise against opting for gloss finish – it tends to highlight every mark and scratch, making it a less forgiving choice over time.

Unlike oil, which deepens the wood’s tones, matt lacquer preserves the wood’s original colour palette while adding a transparent protective layer. The matt finish not only enhances the wood’s natural beauty but also helps conceal scratches and marks, making it a practical choice for everyday use.

Fine sandding + waterproof protection + oil / lacquer – matt finish effect

live edge oak desktop by earthy timber waterproof wood protection

Our exclusive, no-maintenance waterproof protection, developed in-house by Earthy Timber, is applied in a vacuum environment –  a process unavailable anywhere else. This cutting-edge treatment provides the highest level of resistance against scratches, stains, and moisture while preserving the natural beauty and tactile feel of your solid wood countertop.

Designed for heavy-use surfaces such as dining tables and bathroom countertops, this advanced finish is highly resistant to water, heat, alcohol, and food acids. It also features a non-yellowing, UV-protected formula, ensuring your countertop remains flawless for years without the need for reapplication.

With its matt finish, Earthy Timber’s waterproof protection amplifies the wood’s natural grain and tones, adding depth while maintaining its organic beauty. Unlike glossy finishes that may alter the timber’s appearance, our waterproof treatment enhances the wood’s character in a subtle, authentic way.

For those seeking the ultimate protection with zero maintenance, this premium finish is available upon request for an additional cost. To add it to your order, please email us.
