Solid Walnut Shelves by Earthy Timber

Handmade Walnut Shelves Directly From the Maker

At Earthy Timber, every walnut shelf is handcrafted directly by experienced timber specialists using authentic salvaged walnut. We are not resellers or importers of mass-produced shelving. Every solid walnut shelf is made to order in our own workshop using carefully selected hardwood planks, professionally prepared and finished by our team.

Because we manufacture the real walnut shelves ourselves, we maintain complete control over timber quality, kiln drying, craftsmanship, finishing, and structural integrity. This allows us to create high quality solid walnut shelves with genuine character, future-proof durability, and natural beauty that cannot be replicated by veneered or engineered alternatives.

Our solid walnut shelves are made to serve generations, developing character over time and becoming an enduring part of the home’s architecture, atmosphere, and daily life rather than simply another mass-produced furniture item.

The Natural Beauty of English Walnut

English and European walnut is one of the most luxurious and visually distinctive hardwoods in the world. Known for its rich flowing grain, organic movement, warm textures, and natural depth, walnut creates shelving that feels timeless, architectural, and effortlessly refined.

One of the defining characteristics of real walnut is its natural variation in colour and tone. Some walnut shelves may appear predominantly darker with deep chocolate and espresso browns, while others may display lighter caramel, honey, and autumnal tones. Individual walnut shelves naturally feature lighter and darker tones woven through the grain, creating rich contrast, depth, and movement in the timber.

This variation is one of the most desirable characteristics of authentic walnut hardwood. No two walnut shelves are ever identical, as each tree grows differently and every section of timber develops its own unique grain structure, mineral markings, tonal variation, and organic character over decades of natural growth.

Subtle smoky greys, bronze hues, golden undertones, flowing figuring, and natural transitions between lighter and darker areas all contribute to the richness and individuality of every walnut shelf.

Walnut shelves work beautifully in both contemporary and traditional interiors, and complement period homes, as the material feels both organic and sophisticated. The natural variation in the wood allows each shelf to interact differently with surrounding light, architecture, and textures throughout the day.

Every walnut shelf is entirely unique because real solid walnut wood is naturally varied. Grain movement, figuring, tonal transitions, knots, historic markings, and organic textures are all part of the authenticity of genuine timber.

Unlike artificial materials or veneered alternatives, real walnut develops character over time and matures beautifully with age and use.

We Only Use Salvaged Walnut Timber

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Earthy Timber. We use only salvaged timber, responsibly sourced from recovered trees.

Our salvaged walnut comes from fallen trees, storm-damaged timber, estate clearances, and naturally died hardwoods that would otherwise go to waste.. By rescuing and repurposing these exceptional hardwoods, we preserve the natural material’s value and history while reducing unnecessary environmental impact.

Because salvaged walnut has lived a real life before becoming shelving, it often contains natural features such as organic knots, historic beetle markings, natural, characterful splits and checking, grain movement and figuring, weathered textures and tonal variation.  These are not defects. They are part of the authenticity and natural life of genuine salvaged timber.

Every piece of walnut used for our shelves is professionally vacuum kiln dried in our own facilities to ensure it is structurally stable and ideal for high-end interior applications designed to last for generations of use. Professional timber vacuum kiln drying removes excess moisture while preserving the integrity, colour, and strength of the timber, helping minimise movement and ensuring long-term performance indoors.

Selected natural features such as splits, knots, and open grain areas within the walnut shelving may be filled using resin where appropriate, for visual refinement and practical functionality, helping to enhance the natural character of the walnut while maintaining its organic appearance.

For customers who prefer fully organic walnut shelves, these areas can alternatively be left open and/or finished using natural, organic fillers instead of resin upon request.

Vacuum Kiln Dried Walnut Shelves

All walnut shelves produced by Earthy Timber are kiln dried on-site within our own timber yard and workshop facilities.

We use professional vacuum kiln drying technology to carefully reduce the moisture content of the timber in a controlled environment while preserving its natural integrity and character. Unlike conventional kiln drying methods, which primarily remove moisture from the outer surface layers of the wood, timber vacuum kiln drying extracts moisture evenly throughout the entire section of the timber.

This uniform drying process produces stable, structurally reliable walnut shelves by significantly reducing internal stresses within the timber. In contrast with incorrect drying practices, where moisture is not evenly or sufficiently controlled, residual internal stresses can persist and later release in heated indoor environments, resulting in movement, warping, splitting, or damage to both the timber and adjacent surfaces.

Proper kiln drying is essential for high quality solid wood shelving because it:

  • Improves dimensional stability
  • Minimises movement and warping
  • Helps prevent cracking and splitting
  • Eliminates active insects
  • Creates durable, built to last generations hardwood shelving

Expertly vacuum kiln dried to below 10% moisture content, our walnut shelving combines superior structural integrity with the natural warmth, depth of grain, and authentic character only real wood can offer.

Our Own Timber Yard and Workshop

Unlike many online furniture retailers, Earthy Timber operates its own timber yard, drying facilities, workshop, and manufacturing process.

This gives us complete oversight of every stage, from salvaged tree through to finished walnut shelves. By managing the process internally, we can ensure exceptional timber quality and wood features, accurate moisture control, expert craftsmanship, and consistent finishing standards.

Our experience working specifically with solid hardwoods allows us to produce bespoke walnut shelves with genuine expertise and authority in timber craftsmanship.

Solid Walnut Shelves Crafted From Wide Planks

Our walnut shelves are constructed from wide solid walnut wood planks joined professionally using industrial presses and expert joinery techniques.

This allows us to produce bespoke solid walnut shelves with exceptional stability while preserving the natural appearance of wide hardwood timber.

Each real walnut shelf is made from carefully matched planks joined in harmony to create a seamless and balanced finished piece. The wood joints are professionally executed and designed for structural performance.

For customers specifically seeking a single wood slab shelf, we recommend exploring our walnut slab options.

Earthy Wood Features

Real salvaged walnut contains natural, earthy features that reflect the authenticity and life of the tree

At Earthy Timber, we celebrate every detail of the salvaged tree and the organic character that makes real wood so distinctive. Historic beetle markings, natural grain movement, knots, checking, splits, and tonal variation may all be present within the timber, contributing to its unique natural appearance.

Where structurally appropriate, selected knots, cracks, and splits may be professionally stabilised and resin enhanced to preserve the integrity of the shelf while maintaining the natural appearance of the timber.

For customers seeking a fully natural finish, we can also produce entirely organic walnut shelves using traditional organic fillers and stabilisation methods without the use of modern resin.

We do not use artificial veneers, printed wood effects, or synthetic imitation finishes. Every walnut shelf is crafted from genuine solid walnut hardwood with authentic natural character throughout.

Earthy Timber Solid Walnut Shelves Crafted from Genuine Hardwood

Earthy Timber walnut shelves are made from solid walnut hardwood, with no chipboard cores, MDF, plywood, hollow sections, laminate, or imitation veneer layers. Each walnut shelf is crafted from genuine solid walnut timber across its full depth, ensuring consistent strength, natural grain, texture, and appearance throughout the entire piece.

Unlike many floating shelves and engineered wood shelving products that use composite materials beneath a thin veneer surface, Earthy Timber solid walnut shelves are made from solid walnut planks. This allows each walnut shelf to be sanded, refinished, repaired, or resized over time without exposing internal layers or artificial core materials. Solid walnut construction provides lasting durability, structural consistency, and genuine natural wood integrity throughout.

Earthy Timber bespoke shelves are handcrafted for customers looking for real solid walnut shelving, solid wood wall shelves, and natural hardwood shelving made from genuine timber. Each walnut shelf showcases the natural grain and character of solid walnut, with the consistency and strength of solid hardwood across the full piece.

By using solid walnut rather than engineered or veneered materials, each shelf maintains the strength, stability, and consistency of solid timber throughout. This suits customers searching for real wood shelving made from genuine hardwood rather than layered or composite construction.

Solid walnut is naturally durable, dimensionally stable, and valued for its rich organic grain patterns. When properly kiln dried and carefully prepared, it performs very well in both residential and commercial interiors. Because Earthy Timber shelves are made from real hardwood rather than synthetic composite materials, they remain breathable, repairable, and biodegradable throughout their lifespan.

At the end of their long service life – generations into the future – solid walnut shelves can naturally return to the environment rather than contributing to landfill waste associated with composite, veneered, or synthetic furniture materials. This makes genuine solid wood shelving a sustainable choice for environmentally conscious home owners, designed for enduring use across generations.

Sustainable Craftsmanship and Zero Waste Principles

Sustainability is not a marketing trend for Earthy Timber. It is embedded into every stage of how we source, dry, process, and manufacture our solid walnut countertops and walnut shelves.

Our zero waste philosophy allows us to maximise the use of walnut timber that would often be discarded in standard joinery production. Through advanced timber drying and stabilisation technology, we are able to professionally prepare and preserve salvaged hardwoods for generational performance in demanding interior environments.

Every walnut shelf is carefully kiln dried to remove excess moisture, eliminate insects, and stabilise the timber structure. This process ensures the wood remains durable and reliable in kitchens, bathrooms, holiday homes, and second homes where humidity, temperature fluctuations, or irregular heating can often damage lower-quality timber products.

By using reclaimed and salvaged hardwoods, Earthy Timber reduces unnecessary waste while preserving exceptional walnut timber that might otherwise be discarded. Our approach supports sustainable woodworking, responsible timber sourcing, and long-life furniture design that prioritises durability over mass production.

A well made solid walnut shelf should last for generations, not just a few years. Earthy Timber’s handcrafted walnut shelves are designed to provide lasting structural integrity, timeless natural beauty, and long-term sustainability for traditional and modern interiors.

Edge Profiles – Square Edge, Live Edge, or Part Live Edge Walnut Shelves

We offer the following edging styles to suit different interior aesthetics and design preferences.

  • Square edge walnut shelves for a clean architectural appearance
  • Live edge walnut shelves preserving the natural edge of the tree
  • Part live edge walnut shelves combining refined lines with organic character

Each edge profile creates a different visual atmosphere while showcasing the natural beauty of real walnut timber.

Live Edge Walnut Shelves

Live edge walnut shelves are among the most striking and character rich solid wood shelving options available. Unlike fully straight-cut shelves, live edge shelving preserves the natural outer contour of the walnut tree, allowing the organic shape, flowing lines, and authentic edge detail of the timber to remain visible.

At Earthy Timber, our live edge walnut shelves are crafted from genuine salvaged English walnut or European walnut, carefully prepared to retain the natural beauty and individuality, while remaining structurally stable and suitable for traditional and modern interiors.

Every walnut live edge shelf is completely unique. No two trees grow the same way, meaning every walnut shelf carries its own natural movement, grain flow, edge profile, knots, textures, and historic markings. This individuality is impossible to reproduce using manufactured materials or machine-made imitation wood products.

Our live edge walnut shelves often feature:

  • Organic flowing tree-edge contours
  • Natural grain movement and figuring
  • Character knots and natural checking
  • Historic beetle markings
  • Rich tonal variation across the timber
  • Sculptural hardwood textures
  • Authentic salvaged wood character

These features are celebrated as part of the natural authenticity of the wood rather than cut out or masked to create an artificially uniform appearance.

All our live edge walnut shelves are professionaly vacuum kiln dried on site in our own timber facilities to ensure they are stable, structurally sound, and suitable for interior use.

Live edge walnut shelving works exceptionally well in interiors that combine natural materials with architectural design. They pair beautifully with stone, lime plaster, black steel, raw metals, exposed brick, polished concrete, and warm neutral interiors. Whether used in kitchens, alcoves, offices, restaurants, retail interiors, or luxury residential spaces, handcrafted live edge walnut shelves create a strong connection with nature.

Customers looking for a cleaner contemporary aesthetic may prefer square edge walnut shelves, while part live edge shelves offer a balance between refined architectural lines and organic timber character.

Because every piece of salvaged walnut is different, live edge shelves bring warmth, depth, and authenticity into a space in a way that mass-produced shelving simply cannot replicate.

These are not artificial decorative surfaces designed to imitate nature. They are real hardwood shelves shaped by the original growth of the tree itself.

Durable Hardwood Walnut Shelves Built to Last

Walnut is a premium hardwood known for its strength, durability, and future-proof performance.

When professionally kiln dried and properly constructed, solid walnut shelves provide excellent structural reliability for residential and commercial interiors.

Unlike lower-density softwoods or engineered shelving materials, hardwood walnut maintains stability and develops character beautifully over time.

These are heirloom-quality shelves designed for longevity rather than temporary trends.

Walnut Shelves Designed to Last for Generations

At Earthy Timber, we create walnut shelving intended to become part of the long-term feature of a space.

That permanence, authenticity, and connection to natural material is what makes solid salvaged walnut so special.

Walnut Shelves FAQs – Made to Measure, Bespoke Floating Applications & Solid Wood Shelving by Earthy Timber

1. Can walnut shelves be made to measure?

Yes. At Earthy Timber, all solid walnut shelves are made to measure and handcrafted to your specifications. We produce bespoke walnut shelving in custom lengths, depths, thicknesses, and edge profiles including live edge walnut shelves. Our made to order walnut shelves are commonly designed for alcoves, media units, home offices, kitchens, libraries, bathrooms and architectural interiors, ensuring an ideal fit for any home or business environment.

2. Are walnut shelves suitable for alcoves?

Yes. Walnut shelves are ideal for alcove installations due to their strength, stability, and rich natural grain, creating a warm, high-end finish. At Earthy Timber, we specialise in made-to-measure walnut shelving for alcoves, including period properties and irregular spaces. They are also well suited for customers who want to carry out final trimming or minor adjustments on site to achieve a precise fit, particularly where walls are uneven or angles require fine adjustment.

3. Can walnut shelves be used in bathrooms or kitchens?

Yes. Earthy Timber walnut shelves are suitable for kitchens and bathrooms thanks to our careful kiln drying process and controlled timber preparation, which enhances stability in moisture-prone interior environments. When properly kiln dried, finished, and sealed, walnut performs well in both kitchen and bathroom applications. We recommend avoiding prolonged standing water and ensuring adequate ventilation to preserve the timber’s appearance over time.

Our walnut shelves are built for long-term durability, are highly sustainable, and can be refinished when required, restoring them to a brand-new appearance.

4. What is the most sustainable material for furniture and shelving – solid wood, MDF, or reclaimed timber?

Reclaimed solid wood is the most sustainable material for furniture and shelving because it gives existing timber a second lifecycle without requiring the harvesting of additional healthy trees or the intensive manufacturing processes used for engineered boards such as MDF.

As timber specialists with a sustainability-led ethos, we exclusively work with salvaged hardwoods because they represent the lowest-waste, longest-lasting, and most environmentally responsible approach to furniture and shelving production. By recovering and repurposing valuable hardwoods such as walnut, oak, or elm that would otherwise be discarded, burned, or downcycled, we preserve the carbon already stored within the timber while dramatically reducing unnecessary material consumption and processing impact.

Unlike manufactured board products, reclaimed solid wood requires no chemical-heavy composites, synthetic laminates, or high-VOC adhesives. It is naturally durable, fully repairable, refinishable for generations of continued use, and ultimately biodegradable at the end of its lifespan.

From both a material integrity and environmental perspective, reclaimed solid hardwood furniture and shelving is the high quality and most genuinely sustainable option available.

At Earthy Timber, sustainability is at the core of our ethos – reflected in both our name and our approach. We exclusively work with salvaged hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and elm, rather than manufactured sheet materials made from newly processed timber.

5. Why reclaimed solid wood shelving is the most sustainable option?

Earthy Timber’s wood for furniture and shelving is recovered from storm-felled trees, trees removed for public safety, parkland clearances, or responsibly salvaged sources that would otherwise become firewood or waste material.

By carefully milling, drying, and handcrafting this timber into bespoke solid wood furniture as well as walnut shelves, oak shelving, and elm shelves, we give the material a second lifecycle as a long-lasting architectural product.

This circular approach offers several environmental benefits:

  • No unnecessary harvesting of healthy trees
  • Lower processing impact compared to engineered boards
  • Enduring lifespan
  • Fully repairable and refinishable
  • Natural biodegradability at end of life
  • Reduced waste through material recovery and reuse

Each reclaimed wood piece of furniture also retains its natural grain, knots, colour variation, and organic movement, giving every piece a unique character that cannot be replicated with synthetic materials.

6. Is solid wood more sustainable than MDF?

Yes – solid wood furniture and shelving are far more sustainable than MDF because they last significantly longer, can be repaired and refinished over decades of use, and do not rely heavily on synthetic adhesives or chemical binders.

However, solid wood is only truly sustainable when the timber is genuinely and responsibly sourced. Sustainability claims within the timber industry can often be oversimplified or heavily marketed, and certifications such as FSC or PEFC do not always guarantee full transparency regarding forestry practices, biodiversity impact, or whether harvested trees are effectively replenished.

The real sustainability of solid wood comes from responsible sourcing combined with exceptional material longevity.

High quality hardwoods such as walnut, oak, and elm offer major environmental advantages because they are:

  • Exceptionally durable and long lasting
  • Fully repairable and refinishable
  • Capable of lasting for generations rather than years
  • Less likely to require replacement compared with MDF or engineered boards
  • Naturally biodegradable at end of life

This significantly reduces replacement cycles, manufacturing demand, landfill waste, and long term material consumption.

Unlike MDF and other engineered sheet materials, solid hardwood also avoids the heavy use of synthetic resins, adhesives, and chemical binders commonly associated with manufactured boards and VOC emissions.

At Earthy Timber, our focus is entirely on natural solid timber construction, with reclaimed and salvaged hardwood representing the most sustainable approach due to its durability, low processing impact, and extended material lifecycle.

7. Why MDF is not really a sustainable option?

MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is manufactured using compressed wood fibres combined with synthetic binders and adhesives. Although some MDF products contain recycled wood content, the manufacturing process is energy intensive and chemically dependent.

Compared with reclaimed solid wood shelving, MDF typically has:

  • Short lifespan
  • Limited repairability
  • Poor moisture resistance
  • Non-recyclability – the synthetic glues, chemical binders, and additives permanently alter the material composition, making it unsuitable for timber recycling. These compounds contaminate recycling streams, prevent clean material recovery, and significantly limit the product’s ability to be sustainably reused or naturally biodegraded at end of life.
  • High chemical and VOC content

Because MDF relies on synthetic bonding agents, it is not fully biodegradable in the same way as natural solid timber.

8. Why Earthy Timber is a sustainable furniture brand?

At Earthy Timber, sustainability is not a marketing term – it defines how we source, craft, and design our products.

Our handcrafted solid wood furniture as well as walnut shelves, oak shelves, and elm shelving are made from salvaged hardwood chosen for longevity, natural beauty, and circular lifecycle value. Every solid wood shelf is designed to last for generations, can be refinished over time, and will ultimately return naturally to the environment without reliance on high-VOC engineered materials.

For customers seeking environmentally responsible shelving with genuine material integrity, reclaimed solid wood remains one of the most sustainable choices available.

9. How do I get a price for custom shelves?

You can use the Earthy Timber online calculator for instant solid wood shelves pricing based on your dimensions. Pricing depends on size, timber type, and design specifications.

10. Are Earthy Timber shelves suitable for floating shelf installation?

Yes. Earthy Timber shelves are manufactured from solid hardwood and can be specified for floating shelf installation systems at the customer’s discretion. The oak shelving, walnut shelving or elm shelving can be supplied ready for use with appropriate concealed fixing systems of customer choice, allowing a clean architectural floating appearance when installed correctly.

11. Are Earthy Timber’s  oak, elm and walnut shelves solid wood?

Yes. All Earthy Timber shelves are made from 100% solid hardwood oak,elm or walnut. We do not use veneered boards or engineered cores. Each solid hardwood shelf is crafted from real timber planks selected for strength, stability, and natural character.

Important Information about Dimensions & Natural Variations

Every solid salvaged wood countertop is individually handcrafted from carefully selected timber planks. Because every tree is unique, we do not simply manufacture to a fixed size – we carefully select the combination of boards that will create the most beautiful and visually balanced finished piece while working as close as possible to your requested dimensions.

In some cases, this may mean your countertop is manufactured slightly longer and/or wider than the dimensions requested. This is intentional and allows us to preserve the natural proportions, character, and visual impact of the timber. A small degree of oversizing is a normal part of the bespoke manufacturing process and should not be regarded as a defect.

If your project has strict dimensional requirements – for example, where the countertop must fit precisely between walls, inside a recess, or against existing cabinetry – you must let us know by adding a note in the Notes to Order section when placing your order. Please specify your minimum and/or maximum acceptable dimensions, or clearly state if the dimensions must be exact. If no such instructions are provided, we will assume there is reasonable dimensional flexibility and will manufacture your countertop as close as possible to your requested dimensions while selecting the most suitable timber to achieve the best overall visual result.

If you choose a live edge or part live edge countertop, please remember that the width will naturally fluctuate along its length, following the original profile of the tree. These natural variations are one of the defining features of genuine live edge timber and are what make every piece completely unique.

If your live edge or part live edge project is restricted by width, you must specify the minimum and/or maximum acceptable width in the Notes to Order when placing your order. If no width restrictions are provided, we will assume you are happy for us to determine the final width, prioritising the natural shape of the timber and the overall visual impact of your live edge or part live edge piece, while keeping the finished countertop as close as possible to your requested size.

Finishing Options for Solid Wood Countertops

Unfinished (Raw) – This is our most cost-effective option and represents a natural stage in the countertop’s craftsmanship journey. The unfinished wooden countertop is produced to the same high structural and material standards as all of our finished pieces and is delivered in a completely unfinished state that requires substantial additional work before installation and use.

Delivered unsanded and untreated, this option features open knots, fissures, and natural voids, along with unfinished, non-smooth edges. As this timber is sourced from salvaged trees, these characteristics are to be expected and form part of its rustic charm.

Any filling of knots or voids –  using wood filler, resin, or alternative materials – is entirely at the client’s discretion and should be guided by personal aesthetic preference and intended use. Some clients choose to retain the open features to preserve the timber’s natural, rustic character, while others prefer a smoother, more uniform surface. Extensive sanding, surface preparation, filling (if desired), and the application of a protective finish are all the responsibility of the client. This worktop is not suitable for immediate use upon delivery.

This option is best suited to customers who have the tools, experience, and time to complete the finishing process themselves. It is ideal for hands-on individuals looking to fully customise their solid wood countertop from scratch, save on finishing costs, and create a truly unique piece tailored to their space.

Please note: tables and desks are only available as fully finished, fully protected products.

Fine Sanding Only (Ready for application of the protective finish of your choice) – Offered at a modestly higher cost than our raw (unfinished) option, the sanded countertop is supplied with a fully sanded, smooth surface that is ready for immediate application of the protective finish of your choice. Prominent natural features are professionally filled using resin or organic fillers to enhance visual appearance while preserving the wood’s natural character. Select features may be intentionally left open where they contribute to the piece’s overall aesthetic and natural charm. This option significantly reduces preparation time and is ideal for clients seeking a refined, semi-finished surface without the labour associated with full raw preparation.

Important note for the countertops that require on-site modifications – if your countertop requires on-site size adjustments or cutouts, you should choose either ‘unfinished’ or ‘sanded only’ option. This is because any pre-applied protective finish will be disrupted during your modifications, resulting in visible inconsistencies. If a pre-finished countertop is cut or altered on-site, the newly exposed, and treated by you areas, will not perfectly match the rest of the surface, leading to noticeable patchiness. To ensure a smooth, even finish, we recommend completing all size adjustments and/or cutouts first, then applying the protective treatment of your choice to the entire surface for a flawless result.

Professional Finishing – if  you want to receive your solid wood countertop ready to be used immediately (please note this option is only suitable for countertops that do not require on-site cut-outs or size adjustments), our in-house finishing service is the right choice. We offer 3 protective finishing options. Our natural oil finish enhances the wood’s natural depth and autumnal tones by penetrating deeper layers of timber. If you prefer to maintain the original light tones and textures, our transparent matt lacquer finish forms a barrier against damage without altering the wood’s natural appearance. For additional durability, you can also upgrade l to our signature, maintenance free waterproof protection (additional costs apply).

Fine sanding + subtle sheen oil

The unique properties of oil gradually enrich the wood’s grain, deepening its natural hues and enhancing its warm, autumnal tones.  As the oil penetrates the deeper layers of the solid wood countertop, it creates a protective effect that helps prevent damage even as the top layer naturally fades over time.

One of the key advantages of an oil finish is its easy maintenance – surface imperfections can be repaired with sanding and fresh re-application. However, oil-finished surfaces are more prone to marking from liquids, making them less suitable for kitchens, bathrooms or utility rooms.

To keep your solid wood countertop nourished and looking its best, regular re-oiling with light sanding between the coats is essential. This finish is ideal for those who appreciate the natural beauty of wood and don’t mind the upkeep required to maintain its charm.

Please note that an oil finish naturally has a subtle sheen and may bring out slightly orangey undertones in the wood – particularly in lighter species such as oak, ash, or elm.

Fine sanding + matt lacquer

Our matt lacquer finish offers natural look while providing a low-maintenance protection for solid wood countertops. As a cost-effective, water-resistant solution, it is ideal for surfaces exposed to moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms, as well as solid wood tables and breakfast bars.

We offer our lacquer in a matt finish as standard, unless a gloss finish is specifically requested. However, we would advise against opting for gloss finish – it tends to highlight every mark and scratch, making it a less forgiving choice over time.

Unlike oil, which deepens the wood’s tones, matt lacquer preserves the wood’s original colour palette while adding a transparent protective layer. The matt finish not only enhances the wood’s natural beauty but also helps conceal scratches and marks, making it a practical choice for everyday use.

Fine sandding + waterproof protection + oil / lacquer – matt finish effect

live edge oak desktop by earthy timber waterproof wood protection

Our exclusive, no-maintenance waterproof protection, developed in-house by Earthy Timber, is applied in a vacuum environment –  a process unavailable anywhere else. This cutting-edge treatment provides the highest level of resistance against scratches, stains, and moisture while preserving the natural beauty and tactile feel of your solid wood countertop.

Designed for heavy-use surfaces such as dining tables and bathroom countertops, this advanced finish is highly resistant to water, heat, alcohol, and food acids. It also features a non-yellowing, UV-protected formula, ensuring your countertop remains flawless for years without the need for reapplication.

With its matt finish, Earthy Timber’s waterproof protection amplifies the wood’s natural grain and tones, adding depth while maintaining its organic beauty. Unlike glossy finishes that may alter the timber’s appearance, our waterproof treatment enhances the wood’s character in a subtle, authentic way.

For those seeking the ultimate protection with zero maintenance, this premium finish is available upon request for an additional cost. To add it to your order, please email us.

1 review for Walnut Shelves

  1. Rupert

We ordered 5 handcrafted walnut shelves in bespoke sizes 2.5m long, 0.5m wide and 5cm thickness for our alcove. They have a contemporary feel with clean flat edges; along with a couple of partly live edge walnut shelves to display my collection of ceramic sculptures in our lounge.
The shelves are crafted from real walnut wood and beautifully designed, featuring the natural waves and character of the tree, while still maintaining a modern appearance. They look ravishing and I’m very happy with both the product quality and the attentive service from Earthy Timber.
