Our process starts with the elm tree, not a pre-manufactured elm board. We select salvaged elm trunks for their quality, stability and potential. Not every salvaged tree is suitable for furniture, and turning challenging logs into beautiful, stable elm planks requires considerable knowledge and experience. Each trunk is carefully assessed and its milling planned to make the most of the timber, producing planks with the best possible combination of character, stability and appearance. We then kiln dry the timber in-house before selecting and arranging the boards specifically for each individual elm table top.

This gives us control over the timber and its quality from the original trunk through to the finished elm table top, rather than only controlling selected stages of the manufacturing process. We know where the timber comes from, how it has been prepared and dried, and how it is manufactured into the finished piece.

This is fundamentally different from taking a commercially manufactured board and simply cutting it to size. What Does Elm Wood Look Like?

Salvaged elm has a distinctive appearance that is quite different from straight-grained timbers.

Its most recognisable feature is its interlocking grain. The wood fibres can change direction as the tree grows, creating areas of swirling, rippling or cross-grain figure. The growth rings can also be pronounced, while knots and irregular markings may create darker areas within an otherwise lighter board.

Elm typically has a paler sapwood and warmer heartwood, although the exact colour varies considerably according to species, growing conditions and the individual tree. English and European elm is generally light to medium brown, with irregular growth rings and cross-grained character. This natural variation is one of the reasons elm wood furniture has such a recognisable appearance.

The Natural Character of Salvaged Elm

Our elm is salvaged timber. The trees have already been removed because of circumstances such as storm damage, disease, safety work or other unavoidable removal. Consequently, the timber can contain features that tell you something about the tree’s life. Depending on the individual piece, you may see:

• Open and closed knots and branch formations

These are not printed patterns or artificially distressed finishes, they are characteristics of the natural elm timber.

Where a natural opening needs to be filled for practical reasons, we use resin or suitable wood filler. Where a natural feature can remain without compromising the intended use of the table top, we prefer to retain it.

Salvaged Elm Rather than Factory-Uniform Timber

There is an important distinction between what we do and simply buying a standard “elm-effect” or uniform plastic timber panel.

Our salvaged elm wood is selected as individual timber. We mill it, dry it, prepare it, join it and finish it ourselves. The objective is not to make every elm table top look the same. That means your salvaged elm table top will have its own combination of colour, grain, knots and natural markings.

How Many Planks are Used to Make a Solid Elm Table Top?

The number of planks depends on the required dimensions.

As a general guide, a table top around 700mm wide may require two to three planks, while a top around 1000mm wide may require three to four planks.

These are guidelines rather than fixed construction rules. We do not manufacture every top to an identical plank arrangement. The individuality of the timber, grain direction and your chosen dimensions all influence how we select and position the elm planks, allowing the natural grain and features to flow beautifully across the finished tabletop.

Live Edge Elm Table Tops

A live edge elm table top retains the natural outline of the tree along the selected edge. Once the bark is removed and the edge is prepared, the natural shape of the tree remains visible. This can include gentle curves and irregular sections created by the way the tree grew.

If you are looking for a live edge elm dining table, a live edge desk or a natural elm table top, this option gives you the clearest connection between the finished furniture and the original tree.

Mixed Edge Elm Table Tops

Our mixed-edge option combines a natural live edge with sections of squared edge. It is useful when you want some of the character of a live edge elm table top but require a more controlled outline in particular areas.

The live edge section follows the original shape of the tree, so the depth can naturally change along the length. This is a characteristic of the design rather than a dimensional error.

Square Edge Elm Table Tops

Large solid elm boards need to be properly dried and stabilised before they become furniture. At Earthy Timber, we carry out our vacuum kiln drying in-house.

The timber is carefully prepared and dried under controlled conditions before being manufactured into the finished elm table top. This is especially important when working with substantial salvaged boards, where moisture content and internal stresses need to be managed professionally

Vacuum kiln drying forms part of our tree-to-table manufacturing process, allowing us to maintain control over the timber from our wood yard through to the finished furniture.

Rather than allowing this valuable timber to be discarded or burned, we recover it, mill it and vacuum kiln dry it in-house, carefully removing excess moisture and stabilising the timber to a moisture content suitable for interior furniture. We then give the usable elm a new life as a solid table top or piece of furniture, allowing a tree that has already been lost to remain in use for generations.

Every elm tree has developed its own combination of grain, colour, markings and natural features over many years. By carefully selecting and working with these individual boards, we can preserve those characteristics in the finished elm table top rather than removing them in pursuit of uniformity.
