Walnut Slabs by Earthy® Timber
Walnut Slab Tops Handcrafted by Earthy® Timber – Rustic, and Richly Figured with Beautifully Versatile Tones for a Striking Visual Effect
Salvaged walnut slab tops handcrafted by Earthy Timber, once shaped by wild and unforgiving landscapes, yield some of the most striking and expressive grain found in nature. Their figured patterns twist and flow through the timber, revealing a sophisticated interplay of tones – chocolate browns, soft golds, and deep charcoal hues that shift subtly with the light. This natural variation gives each walnut slab a distinct identity, where rugged character meets refined elegance. The intricate figuring of English walnut, combined with Earthy Timber’s craftsmanship, creates exceptionally unique and richly earthy statement centrepieces.
Directly from the Manufacturer
At Earthy Timber, every walnut slab begins as a salvaged English or European walnut tree, chosen for its stable form, and unique grain patterns. We execute every step of production in-house, from salvaged tree to finished walnut slab – milling, seasoning, vacuum kiln drying, machining, and finishing – all under Earthy Timber roof. Like the foundation of a house, this complete control defines the integrity of our walnut slabs, ensuring that each piece is striking, stable, and built to endure.
Exclusively English / European Walnut
At Earthy Timber, we work exclusively with Juglans regia – European / English walnut. Grown in diverse and often unforgiving environments, this species develops a distinctive density and intricate grain unmatched by plantation grown or American walnut. Its slower growth produces tightly packed rings and a refined surface structure, resulting in hardwood with exceptional depth, character, and natural elegance. Unlike the uniform texture of American or tropical varieties, English walnut offers complex figuring, tonal variation, and a uniquely organic aesthetic that reflects its wild origins.
What Colours Can You Expect in Walnut Wood Slabs – Tonal Characteristics of Walnut from Earthy Timber
English walnut slab displays natural tonal variation that ranges from soft, oaky browns through smoky greys to deep, rich chocolate hues. Within a single walnut slab, you’ll often see these tones merge and shift, highlighted by striking swirling patterns and grain movement. The contrast between heartwood and sapwood is expressive, creating depth and visual rhythm across the wood slab.
Interesting Wood Figure and Texture Determined by Milling
Each walnut log is carefully selected for its stability, as not every tree is suitable for milling. The figure and texture of the wood are defined by how it is milled, which is where our extensive knowledge and craftsmanship make all the difference.
Walnut Slabs from Exclusively Salvaged Trees
We work exclusively with naturally salvaged trees, ensuring sustainability while maintaining the highest quality through advanced drying and processing techniques – completely free from chemical treatments. Every live edge walnut slab retains the natural outline of the trunk, showcasing flowing grain patterns, mineral streaks, and the unmistakable character of genuine European Walnut.
Our process takes time – air seasoning to begin stabilisation, followed by precision vacuum kiln drying to achieve balance through the walnut slab’s full thickness. This long approach ensures a walnut slab that is durable, stable, and ready for generations of use.
Earthy Timber Wood Yard – Superior Timber Preparation by a Family-Run Business
English, European walnut (Juglans regia) is a rare and limited hardwood. It does not grow in large numbers, and mature trees suitable for slab production are scarce. Because of this, availability is far lower than that of common hardwoods, and securing consistently high-quality walnut requires patience, experience, and direct material control.
At Earthy Timber, our independence as a manufacturer begins with our own wood yard. We do not rely on third-party suppliers or intermediaries. Every walnut log that enters our yard is hand-selected for structural integrity and grain potential. This complete control allows us to maintain a wide and constantly evolving selection of exceptional walnut slabs – something few can offer given the natural scarcity of the material.
Operating our own yard also means we can allow the timber the time it needs. Each walnut slab is air-dried naturally before vacuum kiln drying – a process that cannot be rushed. Air drying releases moisture gently, relieving internal stress and preparing the wood for the precise, controlled conditions of the vacuum kiln. This slow, deliberate approach creates stability through the entire thickness of the walnut slab, not just the surface.
By contrast, timber processed quickly in commercial sawmills rarely reaches full equilibrium. When wood is forced through the drying cycle too fast, internal stress remains locked within the fibres, leading to movement, or distortion once in use.
Every walnut slab that leaves the Earthy Timber yard has been given the time, attention, and environment it needs to reach its best possible form. The result is superior timber – selectively beautiful, structurally sound, and ready to become part of a lasting project.
Air Seasoning followed by Vacuum Kiln Drying
After sawing, each walnut slab spends years air seasoning. The slow exposure to open air allows moisture to escape gradually, relieving the wood’s internal tension without stressing the grain. Once naturally balanced, it enters our vacuum kiln.
Our vacuum kiln drying process draws moisture evenly from the core outward, achieving a moisture content below 10%. This precision prevents the twisting common in thicker slabs and gives our walnut, with its tight grain and rich colouring, the stability needed for modern interiors.
Moisture Balance and Structural Integrity of Walnut Slab at Earthy Timber
A properly dried walnut slab is defined by its moisture equilibrium. We ensure this balance before any slab leaves our vacuum chamber. Differences between core and surface moisture can lead to unpredictable movement, so by maintaining perfect equilibrium, we create walnut slabs that remain stable – like a solid foundation for a house – ready for further work and finishing.
Many suppliers offer superficially dried or air dried walnut slabs that may appear ready but still retain internal moisture. This hidden moisture can cause unpredictable movement, potentially damaging supporting structures and surrounding worksurfaces once installed. At Earthy Timber, our precise drying process eliminates that risk, delivering structurally sound, stable walnut slabs ready for immediate use.
From Tree to Finished Wood Slab under Earthy Timber Roof
Every wood slab is sawn, seasoned, kiln dried, and finished entirely in-house. This uninterrupted process means total accountability from the moment a walnut tree arrives to the moment the finished walnut slab leaves our workshop.
After drying, we machine and hand-finish each wood slab, revealing the layered character of walnut – the interplay of sapwood and heartwood, the dark streaks, the fine curl of grain. Each walnut slab is made to order, crafted for a specific purpose: a walnut dining table, a walnut kitchen island, a walnut worktop. No prefabrication, no shortcuts – each walnut slab is made for its final home.
The Stunning Appearance and Integrity of a Walnut Slab Surface
Because walnut trees do not typically grow to large diameters, walnut slabs or walnut planks wider than 400 mm are naturally rare. To achieve the broader dimensions required for walnut slab kitchen island, walnut slab dining table, and walnut statement centre pieces, we carefully joint two or three very wide walnut boards originating from the same tree. This approach maintains the natural continuity of tone, grain, and movement across the entire surface.
Each walnut plank is selected, matched, and aligned by hand to preserve the visual rhythm of the original log. The grain flows from one board to the next as if uninterrupted – a continuous, balanced composition rather than a set of disconnected pieces. The result is a surface that reads as one, with subtle shifts in tone and figure that enhance rather than interrupt the overall appearance.
When you choose a walnut slab option from Earthy Timber, we guarantee that all planks used in your piece are cut from the same tree. This ensures natural harmony of colour and structure, and creates a finished surface with the visual depth and coherence of a single, wide slab.
A walnut slab from Earthy Timber transforms the space into a statement of natural beauty and refined craftsmanship. Perfect for striking dining tables, luxury kitchen islands, or feature breakfast bars, they also elevate bathroom vanities, counters, and executive desks with undeniable presence.
Walnut Slab Edge Options
We offer live edge, part live, or square edge finishes. The live edge retains the natural form of the tree; part live edge combines practicality with organic shape; square edge offers a clean, architectural line while keeping the depth of natural walnut visible.

Live Edge Walnut – Understanding Natural Depth and Edge Variation
Because English walnut trees grow in challenging conditions their live edges often undulate dramatically, creating stunning natural shapes. At Earthy Timber, we shape this variation into beautiful, practical pieces, ensuring each walnut slab fits perfectly with its base while preserving the natural flow and character of the wood.
Walnut Slab Finishing Options
An oil finish brings out walnut slab’s natural depth and warmth, allowing the surface to age gracefully with use. A matt lacquer finish offers durable protection for higher-traffic areas while preserving the light tones of wood. For heavy-use environments, we can apply a vacuum-sealed waterproof treatment in matt finish that protects against spills, with tactile feel of walnut grain. Additional costs apply for specialist waterproofing.

Walnut Slab’s Natural Open Features and Surface Treatment
English walnut is naturally reach in prenounced, often open grain, knots, bark inclusions, and mineral streaks. We embrace these natural marks, treating them only where necessary for structure and function. Open features may be left raw for visual character or filled with resin or organic filler depending on the surface’s intended use.
Bespoke Legs and Matching Walnut Countertops
A table base can be custom-engineered to support your walnut slab. Designed for the walnut slab’s unique thickness and shape, it is calculated for balance, load, and proportion. This optional service is available at an additional cost.
Matching walnut pieces – shelves, stair treads, worktops, and sills – can be crafted to unify a space with consistent tone and material. All walnut slab tables carry our lifetime structural guarantee.
