Dining Table Commission Brief

Alex approached us to commission a bespoke dining table for his newly renovated barn, seeking to integrate specific design elements that would complement his modern – rustic interior. This was not Alex’s first project with Earthy Timber; three years earlier, we crafted an outside solid wood dining table 4m x 1m for his property in the South of France. Impressed by the craftsmanship and durability of the piece, which still looked as good as the day it was delivered, Alex returned to us for another project—a salvaged wood dining table and matching bench in oak.

Dining Room Table Design Inspiration

The design inspiration for this new commission came from our past project showcased on our webiste. Alex wanted the new table to fit seamlessly into his kitchen, which featured black powder-coated windows and a lighter oak floor. He envisioned a table that would not only meet his aesthetic preferences but also serve practical needs for family dining.

The table was to measure 3m in length, 1m in width, and 55mm in thickness. Alex enquired whether these dimensions would comfortably accommodate four seats on each side. We assured him it would, and began working on the specifications. The chosen material was a lighter oak to match the flooring, with a matte finish that would be practical and spill resistant.

For the legs, Alex requested loop legs (U-shape legs) similar to those we had made for his previous project, but in a powder-coated matte black finish.  To add a touch of contrast and sophistication, Alex preferred a dark resin to fill the natural gaps in the wood. He also wanted a live edge, but with a slight twist—irregular yet subtle, avoiding overly dramatic waves.

The Outcome – Live Edge Dining Table with Dark Resin Features

We designed and crafted a custom light oak dining table with dark resin enhancements to Alex’s preferences. The lighter oak provided a warm, natural touch, harmonising perfectly with the barn’s flooring. The matte finish offered the desired practicality, while the dark resin and black loop legs added a modern, contrasting element. The live edge detail was carefully executed to achieve the subtly irregular look Alex envisioned.

The final piece not only enhanced the beauty of Alex’s new kitchen but also reflected the unique character of his barn conversion, becoming a centerpiece for many family gatherings and celebrations. Alex shared his satisfaction in a glowing review.
